Saik Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Hi ya'll, I'm heading down to Florida tomorrow for an open house for admitted students on Friday. I'm psyched about the visit, but a little nervous at the same time. I'll most likely be moving down there, 7 hours away from where I am now. If someone else was posting this, I'd say a few of the following: A.) They already accepted you, so they obviously want you there. Quit worrying! B.) Dress nicely, as in dressy jeans or khakis, and a polo. C.) Play nice with others, as this is the first impression outside of your application they're getting. Also, get to know your cohorts. D.) Drive around the town a bit and get a feel of the lay of the land. Do you have any connections in this foreign town? Use them! Even if it's someone you knew from high school and haven't seen since, shoot them a message on facebook. Now, I've taken my own advice, but I'm still a little nervous. Anything I'm forgetting here? Any advice to throw my way? Words of encouragement, perhaps? Thanks! -p
newms Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Another thing you could do to make sure you'll get the most out of the visit is to read up on a few profs' research and have a couple questions that you can ask them while you get a chance to talk with them. It's good to read up a little before talking with a prof, because if you ask a prof about their research in general, they will probably take up all of the conversation describing their research You got it down pat, except to say Have fun!
Saik Posted March 30, 2011 Author Posted March 30, 2011 @Newms - Thanks for the encouragement! I had totally spaced on reading up on their publications. I remember the esoteric things, but forget the common-sense stuff. 'Preciate ya!
