  1. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. -Robert Frost
  2. This was kinda strange. I was in a meeting at 6:30 and got a call from an unknown number. My voicemail box is full (I HATE checking voice mails. It's a pain.), but I call the number back 5 minutes later. It's App State's admission office? The office is closed since it's after 5:00 pm...? I got rejected from App State a couple of weeks ago, and didn't believe I was on a waiting list or anything like that. Now I gotta wait 'till tomorrow morning to find out what that call was about. At least I'm in one of my top picks for school, so I'm not really all that concerned, but if, on the off chance, a spot had opened up... That would be killer
  3. @Newms - Thanks for the encouragement! I had totally spaced on reading up on their publications. I remember the esoteric things, but forget the common-sense stuff. 'Preciate ya!
  4. Hi ya'll, I'm heading down to Florida tomorrow for an open house for admitted students on Friday. I'm psyched about the visit, but a little nervous at the same time. I'll most likely be moving down there, 7 hours away from where I am now. If someone else was posting this, I'd say a few of the following: A.) They already accepted you, so they obviously want you there. Quit worrying! B.) Dress nicely, as in dressy jeans or khakis, and a polo. C.) Play nice with others, as this is the first impression outside of your application they're getting. Also, get to know your cohorts. D.) Drive around the town a bit and get a feel of the lay of the land. Do you have any connections in this foreign town? Use them! Even if it's someone you knew from high school and haven't seen since, shoot them a message on facebook. Now, I've taken my own advice, but I'm still a little nervous. Anything I'm forgetting here? Any advice to throw my way? Words of encouragement, perhaps? Thanks! -p
  5. Anyone have any suggestions as to places that are < 3 mi. from campus? I bike a lot, and am looking for somewhere relatively close. I'm visiting UCF this upcoming weekend for an open house, and I'm checking out Highpoint Club and a couple of other places near campus. My ideal place to live would be an old house partitioned into separate dwellings... Anyone know of anywhere like this near campus?
  6. Rejection from App State today.
  7. Update: West Florida - Rejection
  8. I agree, it's tough to be over-dressed but it's always easy to be under-dressed. A nice pair of khakis and a button up, or even a nice polo is a classy, easy-to-wear outfit. Or some non-distressed, darker denim jeans would work also, with a nice shirt and an undershirt. Just no jorts (jean shorts) and wifebeaters, please.
  9. Heard back from a couple more places for their MA/MS programs: Central Florida: Accepted West Florida: Rejected Florida Tech: Waitlisted

  11. Hiya duoduo, I'm guessing you've already checked out siop.org? http://www.siop.org/gtp/ is the link to their ranking resources and info about PhD programs in I/O and HRM.
  12. For me, the last section of the GRE both times I took it was optional; it was entirely new question types. Needless to say, after working steadily for 2.5+ hours, I didn't take the last part of the test. The kicker, though, was they they gave cash rewards to test takers who took the experimental section and significantly improved their score from the "normal" GRE section.

    sub 3.0 GPAs

Same thing happened to me! 2.4ish GPA in undergrad, 3.7ish in 21 hours of post bacc-work, a 1300+ GRE score and I thought I wouldn't get in anywhere. I got accepted into one of my top three programs! Granted, it was provisionally, but as long as I make above a 3.0 my first year there I believe I'll be fine. Congrats!
  14. Hey, congrats yourself! Did they make any mention of funding in your email or in the letter? I'm going down there for the accepted student open house April 1st; are you?
  15. Hi, Welcome! I was in a kinda-similar situation; my GPA was abysmal (2.5 > GPA) at my undergrad institution. I did some post-bacc coursework and my gpa in those 21 hours (got a minor in business) was 3.71; I just recently got accepted to one of the top programs I was looking at. So your GPA isn't everything. Where I did my post-bacc work, if you took 6 hours or less per semester you didn't have to pay student fees, just course fees, so that's one option to look at. Another one is to ace the GRE, I'm talking a 1300+ score. That's also what helped to offset my undergrad GPA. Take a review class, get some study guides, download the POWERPREP software and actually sit down and work at it. It's not fun, but it pays off beautifully in the long run. I took the GRE twice, and as on the SAT, my score jumped up a good bit the second time since I was a lot more comfortable. So, if you get a bad score, take it again and you'll do better. Remember, the GRE's format is changing in the next couple of months. Last time the GRE changed their format, the scores for the new format were lower than the scores for the old format. I don't know if there are any review books out there that apply the new format, but you may want to squeeze in taking the GRE before it changes. You can only take it once per 30-day month, and 5 times a year, so I'd take it soon to see how you do and to give yourself some time to see if you need to study more and take it again. Good luck!
  16. Hi Cogneuro, Try emailing the department; this has always worked out well in my case. Good luck!
  17. I got my acceptance letter for UCF's M.S. program this afternoon No mention of any sort of funding; I'm going to call them tomorrow and see what's up with this. I don't think I'm going to fill out the few applications I have left for the sole fact that the only other schools I would even consider instead of UCF are App State and Ga State. I'll probably end up at the one that funds me the most. When I got the acceptance email today I started giggling like a little girl and ran around my apartment a couple of times. It's been a good day
  18. Hi, Welcome! Those credentials look pretty impressive for a MS program. I'm not familiar enough with PhD programs to say anything, but I would venture a guess and say you'll do well in finding a school for a master's. Good luck! P.S. And get on the GRE!
  19. Thought this might be of help to someone. I just got off the phone with the ETS, since this is day 15 after I took my GRE test and their website says it takes approx. 15 days for new test scores to become available. They said it's 15 business days, not 15 calender days, and that physical letters with my score report have been mailed to the institutions I asked for during the test day. Sooooo, even if the website isn't updated to reflect your most recent test, the letters with your score report may have already gone out. This is good news for me. Have a great day y'all!
  20. Dude, it sounds like you've already overcome some pretty significant hurdles to get where you are. Don't let all that go to waste just because your GRE score sucks. I studied for three months as well, and my initial powerprep diagnostic test score and my final score when I took it 'live' increased pretty significantly. I'm talking about 5 hours a week, an hour a day 5 days a week for three months. That's doable. Don't sell yourself short. In the words of Rob Schneider and Ice Cube, "You can do it!"
  21. Plan A? Get a MS in I/O from a pretty well known school, work in the field for a couple of years, then return for a PhD. After getting the PhD, get a tenure track position at a large SEC school Plan B? Go to a less prestigious school and get a MA in I/O, or even an MA in experimental psych. Teach at a community college for a couple of years, then go back and work on a PhD. Plan C? Work at McDonalds
  22. Thanks for the kind words whitecarnation I got an email back from Florida Tech this morning that said they're still in the process of looking over applications, and no letters have been sent yet.
  23. Hey y'all, I've been reading these posts and decided it was time to sign up and share my experiences. I'm applying to I/O and HRM master's programs for this upcoming Fall, 2011. I've applied or am in the process of applying to... U Central Florida George Mason West Florida Florida Tech Middle Tennessee State Univ. U of Tenn @ Chattanooga App. State Georgia State (M.S. in HRM) Backup: Valdosta State Backup to my backup: Georgia Southern (Experimental Psych) Maybe East Carolina, they have a late application deadline So, as you can see, I'm going for the shotgun-approach of applying to a slew of schools and going with the one that best fits me and also offers the most funding. My GRE is 610V/690Q, 4.5 AW and my letters of rec are more than adequate. My personal statement is clean; I have an interesting story that might hurt or help me, depending on who reads it. I've worked in a lab at UGA for a year, and I'm in the process of getting some research presented at Georgia Southern. I've visited App State and Georgia State to see what their programs are all about and to sit down with all the professors I can to get a foot in the door. So I have some things working in my favor. I had a medical WD at a school in my past, however, and a rather sorry GPA at UGA (2.5 > GPA). However, my GPA in 21 hours of post-bacc work at Ga Southern was much, much better (3.71), so I'm not all that concerned with my GPA. I've finished apps at ~5 of the schools listed above, and I'm waiting on a random transcript here and a letter of rec there to hit the rest of them and I'll be done with this whole application process. I haven't gotten any psychical mail nor email telling me anything but that schools are currently looking at my application. I sent an email to a few of the programs with earlier application deadlines (George Mason, UCF) today and I haven't heard back yet. Thanks for posting ya'lls experiences on this thread. I'll continue to update. Good luck!
