athenianstranger Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Is anyone going to Georgetown's Open House for admitted students next Friday? Is anyone familiar enough with the area to offer hotel suggestions?
secretly_yes Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I am not going, but I live in DC. I suggest you try hotwire.com and select the "Embassy Row" area. Generally any hotel that they include in that area is an easy commute to Georgetown. If you want specific hotels, Gtown has a shuttle from the Holiday Inn-Key Bridge as well as from the Holiday Inn on Wisconsin Ave. Hotel Palomar, the Marriott Residence Inn and the rest of the Dupont Circle hotels are close to Georgetown's Dupont Circle shuttle. Good luck!

Good luck! Yup I'll be there as well, and also live in DC. For hotels I'd suggest finding something actually in DC--maybe Foggy Bottom, Du Pont area if possible--rather than VA. Might be a little more expensive but you'll get a better feel for the city. Then again, if you find a good deal in VA make sure it's in or near Rosslyn so you can take the shuttle or just walk over.
Count de Monet Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I am currently visiting Catholic University and I can tell you that finding a hotel for this week was a flipping nightmare. Hotwire/Hotels.com/Travelocity/ect couldn't find me anything in DC for less than 350 a night. Eventually found a small but quite nice B and B right by Catholic for a good deal less. Although, that also means I'm in the Brookland neighborhood...lol I'm guessing the high prices are because of Spring Break and the Cherry Blossom Festival?

I would tell you to go with a hotel in the Rosslyn area of Arlington rather than trying to find a place in DC. The rooms will be far less expensive (although they won't be cheap anywhere in the area), and you'll be able to do more because it's simply easier to move around outside of DC. DC isn't like other urban centers- it's spread out because there are no high rises, the "suburbs" are actually older and more established than DC itself, and more people live in the "suburbs" than live in the city. In fact, nearly as many people live in the City of Arlington as live in DC.

Also realistically, if you are going to live on a grad student budget in DC the chances that you'll end up living in Dupont/Foggy Bottom are slim because these are very expensive areas. Arlington is nice, especially if you stay in the Rosslyn-Ballston area or in Old Town Alexandria. Both are a pretty easy commute to Gtown (combination metro and free shuttle.)
