  1. Well, I'm officially done as official word Toronto came in...rejected. No surprise. Going to Catholic University in DC.
  2. Officially rejected by Georgetown...took them long enough to mail me a decision
  3. I am currently visiting Catholic University and I can tell you that finding a hotel for this week was a flipping nightmare. Hotwire/Hotels.com/Travelocity/ect couldn't find me anything in DC for less than 350 a night. Eventually found a small but quite nice B and B right by Catholic for a good deal less. Although, that also means I'm in the Brookland neighborhood...lol I'm guessing the high prices are because of Spring Break and the Cherry Blossom Festival?
  4. going to my cousin's wedding in Italy and will probably spend a month with my family who are over there at the end of June/July
  5. grumble grumble grumble.....something something something....darkside
  6. Oh, I know that. I just want the letter so I can burn it and burn away all the evil spirits associated with it! lol
  7. still waiting on Georgetown and Toronto....but I'm pretty damn sure that I'm just waiting for rejection letters
  8. Given that there were only 4 spots for International students, the odds of getting in at all are slim to none if you are an international student anyways.
  9. Well, getting down to the end here... Toronto only had 4 spots for visa students in poli-sci so I should probably cross it off as well....
  10. An "inside source" has told me that Toronto's admissions committee is meeting today. Results out as early as next week....
  11. I would have a very honest discussion with your current undergrad adviser about NE's placement record for graduated PhDs...if it's not very good then maybe you want to think of sitting out another year, but if you are convinced that you can get a job with a PhD from NE then I'd take it and be happy.
  12. You should talk to them directly. If they wont give you funding your first year but will guarantee funding if you meet a certain GPA in years 2-4 then get it in writing! Do it. You must get it in writing. My friend is currently doing his MFA in music and he went to a particular program because they told him he'd get only a little funding his first semester but almost full tuition waiver in addition to his TA pay in his second semester...well guess what, they didn't and he's got nothing in writing to prove that they did say that so he's out of luck.
  13. Don't go anywhere unless they give you money. Once you are already there and paying full tuition why should they waste their resources on you since you are already there as opposed to funding someone else who they hope to entice? SHOW ME THE MONEY should be everyone's mentality here.
  14. It was really weird...I know a couple of people, along with myself, who all got rejections at once a few weeks ago but then everything just sort of stopped...
  15. Georgetown is strapped for funds so full funding is only going to about half of the people who go.
  16. He taught a course last year on the politics of the book of Genesis, which I took. He also told me he wrote an article about the Book of Esther, so he is doing work on religion. I know he has a book coming out on Rousseau which he spoke of so I don't know if it's a full switch or he's simply doing a few different things because he has the opportunity to.
  17. He's not that old...I don't know if he's thinking of retiring but I know last year there was a good group of new PhDs who came in to work with him. Also I know people doing their PhD with him...so I'd assume he wouldn't retire while he still has students...but I don't have any real insider info.
  18. What's wrong with Toronto? Cliff Orwin is there and despite the Poli-Sci department having gone from one dominated by Bloom-Orwin-Pangle to one that is much more diverse he still is the big fish there. I did my MA there and the students in the department are wonderful, as are the professors. I took a class with Orwin, he's brilliant (even though I didn't agree with everything he said), and a wonderfully kind person who is always there for students when they need him.
  19. why not just ask them if you can extend that deadline?
  20. Yes, they do admit people without funding, but I don't see enough admits on the board to think they're done with their acceptances with funding.
  21. It never hurts to ask a school to match the funding package you would get elsewhere...
