Political Science - Fall 2011 Cycle

Georgetown admits a very large number of people...in 09 it was 92 people admitted out of 560+ applications. Not a bad number. Now, getting in with funding is another matter all together... http://government.georgetown.edu/57323.html I would expect that if they're still admitting a lot of people it will take a little while to notify everyone. -

I had heard a couple of years ago from a professor that BC tends to stay in-house for PhD candidates, pulling them from the MA program. -

hooray for the official rejection from Princeton! I'm glad they told everyone at once that they were rejected. -
I know people who did their MAs at Carleton and enjoyed their time there. Carleton does have a very good reputation in Canada; however, I think I have to agree with the poster above. Unless you are going to Toronto or McGill I'd think a PhD from an American university would be of better value.

Well then...that's ok. Who wants to live in New Jersey anyways? -
Riverside is a ****-hole anyways. Go elsewhere to a better program and a better city!

I'm still waiting in Princeton...but I'm not holding my breath... -
I did a 1 year MA program last year, so I had asked a couple professors about getting things published and they told me that in an MA program you just don't have time. As a PhD student you want to write papers for classes with the thought that they could also be published. As an MA student you don't have the luxury of doing that because you are taking more classes so you have too many things to do. You write papers for the sake of getting them done and having them not suck, not for the purpose of publishing them. Now, this year that I've been out of school I've gone back and worked on some of my papers and have submitted a couple of them to journals, have presented one at NPSA and will present another at WPSA, but I would not have had the time necessary to do this as a masters student. I am not getting into Harvard, Yale or any of those tip top super schools, but I doubt I didn't get in because of not having publications.

It's not as cool as the Yale acceptances, but I just got a personalized email from the graduate coordinator at Claremont saying I had been accepted. Official materials wont be sent for about a week but they wanted to tell me I got in. So, there's acceptance number 2! -

I found staying in contact didn't make things go quicker. At this point I just think we need to wait a week or two and then hound them if nothing has changed as it sounds like they're just starting to get organized. -
Thank you for the information. It is much appreciated. However, I guess I'm sort of left at a bit of a loss with part of what you've told us. Looking for someone who will complete the PhD and get a job seems to imply a few things: 1) the person has the pure smarts to be able to complete all the classes primary and secondary fields with at least a B+/A- average, 2) The person has the study habits and is able to handle the pressure in order to complete 2 comprehensive/major field exams, 3) the person has the ability to produce enough papers that are of such a quality to be published, 4) the person has the public speaking ability to make both classroom and conference presentations, and 4) the person has the ability to, essentially, write a book (his/her dissertation). I guess GPA and GRE scores would be an indicator of the person's ability to do things 1 and 2. A writing sample would help to figured out #3. However, and I'm going to echo wtncffts' question, it seems that if you interviewed the application you could get a much better feel for their personality and their speaking abilities. I know you've said it's an inexact science, but recommendations, personal statements and a resume can only shed so much light on a candidate's ability to be a teacher which is an important part of being a graduate student and then becoming a professor. There are certain skills, qualifications, and abilities that are necessary in order to get a teaching positions like public speaking ability, giving presentations, personal confidence, patience, etc that can't be captured in written material. There is ultimately no indicator of a person's ability to write a dissertation, unless someone has already written one, but perhaps a personal interview, or a phone interview, could make the inexact science a little bit less inexact.

I had to email them several times because my GRE and transcripts were listed as "not received." Finally, last week, my GRE scores were listed as received (about 6 weeks after I sent them), but I was told that the admissions people were working frantically to organize all the transcripts (I sent them 7 weeks ago!!!). They are still listed as "not received" but I was reassured that they don't need to be resent but they have not yet been processed.... -

it's my understanding that last year, due to budget restraints, Chicago cut their admits in half. I doubt much has changed since last year. I'd be willing to bet that it would be easier to get into Harvard than Chicago at this point. -

Both Notre Dame and Wisconsin had basically the same rejection...I wonder if there's a company out there that generates generic rejection letters... ...hmmm...I smell a potential billion dollar business idea -
Got to go with the better program because while a lesser school may offer you more money now, you'll earn more money later by going to the better school because you'll actually get a teaching job.
