DKT Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Hey All! So I got into 3 schools for my Master's already. One of the school emailed me March 10th telling me I was accepted and I would receieve things in the mail...so far nothing. I called Monday and got the run around then was told someone would call back...and of course nothing. I got into NYU but I am trying to be realistic and smart about the cost of tuition in addition to the cost of living. I already have loans from undergrad and I want to get a PhD eventually. I have not heard from my top choice. I called on Monday and was told the decisions would go out in a week or two...emailed them and was mistakenly told that I did not apply...called and found out I did have a current application that was under review. Told them they were my first choice however I was accepted at a school with a deadline of April 15th...They said that usually they try to get decisions around this time but utlimately it was up to the factulty. I have seen here that 2 weeks ago a few people were rejected which sucks for them but makes me feel like my application still has a chance. At this point I want to email the director of admission at the end of week asking about my status because it is my top choice. But I figure if I wait until next Saturday I will have to make a choice between my schools and give up on my top school. This process is so frustrating! Hoping to keep my hair in my head by the end
Mal83 Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Yeah, I've been taring my hair out over waiting for my second choice school to grace me with a decision. I've been waitlisted at my first choice. This seems to be a dilemma a lot of people are having. Schools with later deadlines for getting their own decisions out than others who need to know sooner. It sucks. I can't tell adcomms to hurry up because I need to let another school know. So I've been thinking a lot about what to do if I should get an offer from my first choice eventually in May which is way beyond anyone else's deadline. I'd be absolutely nuts to decline the offer that I do have and could potentially get in the mail next week. I can't do that and I won't. But are there really any consequences to accepting an offer and going along like you're going there and then pulling out after you get what you want? You'd loose your deposit, but if it's worth it to you then is that such a big deal in the long run? I mean you might have to not attend for any number of reasons, financial situation changes drastically, family emergency, just big change of plans...etc. Finally getting an acceptance from your top choice is also one of those reasons...I just don't know if there are any repercussions to doing that other than loosing your deposit. I figure I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

nguyenho Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 I know why all the scientists and professors got bald. They lost the hairs not because of doing lots of research but because of the waiting for admission process. joops 1
joops Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 I know why all the scientists and professors got bald. They lost the hairs not because of doing lots of research but because of the waiting for admission process. Except for philosophers. Their hair reacts slightly differently... by receding off of their heads on onto their faces.

Unless you sign some kind of contract you are ok to back out... I am in this same situation and I emailed the department and told them I was in a financial situation right now and needed to wait on another school to show me what they were offering financially. I said that I needed to make sure I made the right choice for me in my life right now. As long as you don't place a value on each school it doesn't hurt to ask for an extension.
