I called Milton Muldrow again. He said the recipients will officially know from grants.gov in July. Then I asked, "There is an orientation in May though right?" and he said that the invitation emails for the orientation will be sent out within the next week or so.

Ah ha! Way to get an answer to the question. =) It does make me wonder if they end up offering more awards after orientation, or if they just wait to do the official announcement until July.

LOL. Thanks for calling and asking. So, I guess this means that if we don't hear by this Friday then we're SOL on getting the grant? That totally has me waiting on pins and needles, even though I thought all of my fellowship waiting was over for the year. Gah! I may try to give them a call tomorrow to get an update.

Hmmm, that's an interesting thought. I bet they just wait to make the official announcement. A friend of mine got an EPA STAR fellowship and he found out about it several weeks before the public announcement and was not allowed to say anything to anyone about it in the interim.

This is what I figure too...I just never understand these large delays in official announcements unless they are giving room for changes. =/

I am too anxious...I called again. The dates keep changing! Now, I asked "if the orientation invitations for the Nancy Foster applicants have been sent out?" and was told that they have not, and probably will be in the next two weeks. That is really cutting it close to the orientation.

I have not heard anything this year yet. However, I applied last year and did not get it. I found out on June 22, 2010 that I did not receive it. However, another student in my program got one and she was notified in May and had already attended the orientation before I even got the rejection letter. So, it seems like they notify the winners in time to go to the orientation (May 29th this year) and then notify everyone else after the fact.

Do you know when in May the student heard?

Yeah...NOAA said they would send the orientation invitations in the next two weeks, so by the 20th. I wonder if it is possible that the invitations were sent already, but the recipients are not allowed to mention it? In that case, the only way we would know is if we keep calling NOAA and asking if they sent the invitations.

Well, we do only have a sample size of about 4 (+ any lurkers)...so it is hard to tell whether people have been notified. =/

I have low hopes for this scholarship though...I am never quite sure what they are looking for. The first time I applied to NF, it was a totally different process than last year and this year. Last year's winners seemed to all have some conservation/management focus, although this isn't a specific requirement (this makes sense with NOAA's goals, but I don't know how much to tailor my proposal to that focus).

Has anyone that's been reading this been notified about the Nancy Foster scholarship this year yet??

I have not. So, I keep calling NOAA to ask if they've sent invitations out.

I also have low hopes for this scholarship. Plus, I noticed a typo in my research proposal which was really upsetting.

Have they said that they've sent them yet? I'm wondering if it's a legal thing and they can't notify people who didn't receive the award (or even tell them about the notification of winners) until June.

I wouldn't worry about a typo at all... chances are your reviewers missed it, too!

I called and emailed today. No answer. No response.

Thanks for trying. When I emailed in the past, it took a while for them to respond. When I called before, Milton was at his desk except maybe once, so maybe it is lunch time?

I left a message, so hopefully he'll answer either the email or the call. I will post when I hear something.

I wish we could find someone that had heard already... I find it odd that nobody is writing to say they've found out....

Still nothing...I tried calling again, but no answer.

I just called and spoke to Milton. He said the training program invites for the NF scholarship hadn't gone out yet. I asked when they would, and he said probably by the end of the week.

Wow, they really can drag this out until the last minute...I had assumed they had been sent and was moving it off my list of things to think about...

Well, he could also not be telling the truth and they could have already sent them out. I think there's some weird confidentiality thing going on with notifications... the girl I know who got one last year basically had to promise not to tell anyone until they notified the "non-winners" in late June.

I hope he is telling the truth...It is not like we are asking who received the invitations...
