Are merit scholarships negotiable?

I received an offer of acceptance about 2 weeks ago. They would like me to respond & submit a $100 deposit. However, I have not received any information on financial aid. When I interviewed, the professor mentioned to me that I would be eligible for a merit scholarship. Can I negotiate this? I have emailed the school to ask for this information prior to my accepting & sending in the deposit. I would like to know what they plan to offer me in terms of financial aid, since this is a large factor in my decision-making. Is this appropriate for me to do? I realize that I am kind of down to the wire with my time-frame, etc.
