  1. It depends on the book. I decided to opt for the paper versions, mostly due to the page number issues. However, I would not hesitate to download supplement reading for my courses to my Kindle.
  2. The title pretty much says it all. I have one textbook that I could obtain via my Kindle, and I'm wondering what opinions are on this. My one concern is that for this particular text my Kindle shows a "location number" rather than a page number. However, I can see that it would be convenient to carry my Kindle with me rather than lugging around a hefty textbook. What do you all think?
  3. Right. I do agree with you. I did not think it would be imperative to contact him this early. However, I was called by my admissions counselor & told that I needed to call him ASAP to register for classes, this after I had received a letter stating the same thing. Yesterday, I called the admissions counselor to clarify things, and she did mention that the letter that had been sent out was in error & apologized for that. So...I hear what you all are saying, and I can see how this is a terrible time of year to contact a prof. I'm good with it now. I've got my big girl panties on.
  4. Also, I was told via letter & phone to contact my advisor to schedule a meeting & acted accordingly.
  5. Actually, I didn't ask my advisor to "decide on the courses" for me. I have already perused the course listings & decided on an appropriate plan for myself. However, I would like "advisement," specifically because I have received an incredible grant that allows me to take a few elective courses. I do feel, since there are factors like prerequisites that come into play, that I should discuss this with an advisor. This is impossible to do if he won't speak with me (or answer emails). However, I do see your point about acting independently.
  6. Hello, all. I have received a packet of information from the university I am attending, listing my advisor's name & contact information. I proceeded to email him about a week ago with no response. Today, I called the number listed on the paper, and he was completely rude to me. He told me: "No, you don't need to speak with me. I'll have my secretary call you." So, his secretary did call me right back & wanted to schedule me for classes over the phone with her. I found this odd. Shouldn't I be meeting with an advisor to discuss my courses as this is my first semester in grad school? It was all very awkward & really seemed to set up a red flag to me. I am really not happy with how this went. Please tell me whether this is normal. Any advice is appreciated.
  7. Do they notify everyone or just the recipients?
  8. I received an offer of acceptance about 2 weeks ago. They would like me to respond & submit a $100 deposit. However, I have not received any information on financial aid. When I interviewed, the professor mentioned to me that I would be eligible for a merit scholarship. Can I negotiate this? I have emailed the school to ask for this information prior to my accepting & sending in the deposit. I would like to know what they plan to offer me in terms of financial aid, since this is a large factor in my decision-making. Is this appropriate for me to do? I realize that I am kind of down to the wire with my time-frame, etc. Thanks!
  9. Anyone familiar with the NHSC loan forgiveness program? I think I may pursue this.
  10. So now that I'm accepted, I'm trying to develop a strategy for coming away with the least amount of debt (though I know I will probably have to take out some loans). I've been told I am eligible for a merit scholarship based upon my undergrad GPA, though I don't know the numbers, and this won't be substantial. I'm also going to apply for need-based aid through the university. Other than that, any ideas for bringing down the cost? I thought of applying to an assistantship-type position, but I didn't feel comfortable doing that my first year. Perhaps for my second year I will do that.
  11. I just received my acceptance via snail mail today!!!!! Nothing is mentioned about scholarship, however, though the prof said I would be eligible during my interview. They want a $100 deposit & THEN they will send more info.
  12. This is my first post here. I applied for an MSW program at a local university. I am unable to move due to work, my son, etc, and this is the only school in the area that offers the MSW. I had an interview a little over 3 weeks ago (2 days after they received my last reference), and I thought i would hear something by now. I thought everything went well in the interview. How long is customary to wait? Does this mean a rejection for me? It's driving me crazy! Melody
