maeby-me Posted April 7, 2011 Posted April 7, 2011 Hello everyone! I've been lurking around for a while, and finally decided to post something. I kept looking for a thread for people going to University of Washington this fall, but since I can't find one, might as well post one. I just accepted my offer and am pretty excited about it. Anyone else accepted the Day Program yet? Might I have people in my cohort on here to talk to this summer? Hopefully there are others, like me, who have been looking for this. If it already exists and I missed it, please redirect me! :-D

Did you attend any of the open houses or whatever they had going on at the beginning of the month? I'm out of state so I'm not sure I'll be able to make it up there before the fall.
maeby-me Posted April 14, 2011 Author Posted April 14, 2011 random question. does uw still require the gre for the msw program? thanks and congratulations! great school! Nope, they don't require the GRE anymore. That was what kept me from applying in the past, I assumed all programs required it. I am horrible at test like that! And thank you for the congrats, it really is an amazing school... I still can't believe I got in!

I went to part of the prospective student days event... I came away from it feeling like I did too much research about the school before going (which I suppose is not a bad thing). Wasn't really any new information. I presume by your name (AZmsw) that you are coming from Arizona, right? Have you been to Seattle before? Are you doing the Day Program? What concentration are you looking at? Should I stop asking so many questions? Oh, and congratulations again!!
kardell Posted April 14, 2011 Posted April 14, 2011 Hello to all those accepted, denied and waitlisted! I was waitlisted last month and was a little bit surprised. After checking my status online it looks like my transcripts somehow arrived past the deadline? - maybe that has something to do with it. Is anyone else waitlisted out there? Anyone know if it's a ranked waitlist, how many people waitlisted there are, etc? The admissions office hasn't been the most communicative. I have 7 years of service experience both full and part time. Have worked with extremely diverse populations - for example - at risk youth on Chicago's south side, worked/lived in Korea, am currently a full time, long term volunteer in Honduras. Speak Spanish intermediately. History of adversity, only/first person in family to attend college. Have research experience. Was accepted to Columbia with funding, but waitlisted at U of Washington and U of Denver( because one letter of rec arrived a week late) - Still waiting to hear from one more school. Am interested in International Social Work.

I got into the Day Program and I'm looking at a concentration in Community Centered Integrative Practice because I think it might fit my interests (refugee mental health and international social work) pretty well. What about you?

What about you? It is a great city, I've only lived here for about a year and a half (came from Iowa) but it already feels like home. That concentration does seem to be a good fit for your interests. I'm looking at the Mental Health concentration, without a clear direction for what I want to do with it. I've been working in the domestic violence field for almost 5 years, so it seemed the the logical direction. Have you started looking at areas to live? When are you planning on moving? I'm happy to find someone else in the Day Program. Most of the people I met at the prospective student event were in the Extended Degree Program.

I was hoping to be able to escape a portion of the southern Arizona summer but since classes start at the end of September I really should stay here through the end of August to save up a little more dough. From what I hear Wallingford is a nice area to live, I think I might focus my search there when I arrive. I also hear good things about Montlake, Green Lake, and Eastlake. I gotta tell you though, all these 'lake' names are starting to get me a bit mixed up. I have to drive about 80 miles to find a lake around here. Kardell, I hope you get off the waiting list! I'm always interested to find someone else who wants to get into international social work, and I too applied to U of Denver for that reason. They've got a great international program; it was just too expensive. Any idea how you're going to tackle the international career goals? From the research I've done it seems that we'll need to blaze our own trails to a certain extent.

Right now I wish I could have some nice Arizona summer! It has been so cold here lately. But I agree that classes do start very late, which is weird. All of those neighborhoods are nice, you might also check out Ravenna, sort of the same vibe as the other neighborhoods you named. (I also wanted to give you a non-lake area to look at, to help with the confusion )
kardell Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 Well, I'm off the waitlist!!!!!!!! I'll have to wait and see how much financial aid is offered then decide between UIC (instate tuition) and U of Washington. First choice is Washington due to my interest in International Social Work. I guess I'll know by June! AZmsw, I'm from Phoenix.... left Arizona 5 years ago : ) To those who already live in Seattle - Is it advisable to live there with a car or possible to live well without one? maeby-me Posted April 25, 2011 Author Posted April 25, 2011 Congrats kardell! That is great news! I'm still waiting on financial aid too, but have already accepted so just have my fingers crossed I figured I could give a little insight on having a car since I've been here for a couple years now. It completely depends on where you live! Any of the neighborhoods near UW (University District, Wallingford, Greenlake, etc, etc) are all pretty easy to handle without a car, by bus, bike, even walking depending on location. Parking can be annoying in a lot of areas of Seattle especially around UW and the Social Work Building. I plan on looking for a place in one of these areas so that I don't have to use my car so much. If you have questions about specific areas (accessibility or whatever) feel free to let me know! Congratulations again! I hope you get funding since it is your top choice! Best of luck! magicflute Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 (edited) I applied to UW. But I haven't received any notice of decision from the admission office yet. Does this mean I was rejected? Edited March 21, 2012 by magicflute
SunsetHarbor Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 I just received my offer today - so they are sending out currently. Not sure the timeline on financial aid packages.
