joonam Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 So, i will be attending RISD. I sent in my deposit last weeks and now i am very excited and scared at the same time. at the moment i am trying to figure out where i should live. off campus is definitely cheaper, a nice room runs around 500-600$. oh also is anyone from CA? and how are u planning to move to RI? so lets talk! who is going? mediums? expectations?
prickly pear Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 hello! I'm looking to attend either art center (Industrial Design) or risd (Furniture Design) at the moment. i'll have a decision by the end of this week hopefully, but leaning toward risd. i'm also planning to live off campus, but not really sure where to start looking. i might plan a trip up there again soon to find a place. i really need somewhere close to campus, because i'm going to leave my car. i'm from texas, so i would probably just crash it into something while driving in the snow. in regards to the actual move, might hire movers. have you gone to visit the school yet? what program are you in? are you thinking apartment or renting a room from someone?
joonam Posted April 11, 2011 Author Posted April 11, 2011 furniture design... that is soooooo exciting! i am in the printmaking program. well, i was looking on craigslist, i dunno where else to look. i booked a flight for late may so i could visit the campus and check out some houses. I want to move in around July, August. that would give me time to explore the city and the campus. it would be nice to get that out of my system before classes start. yeah i dont have a car. i think it be tooo much hassle. since i am not in the area, i cant get a group of people together to rent a house. so im looking for a room. which school offered you more financial aid?
prickly pear Posted April 11, 2011 Posted April 11, 2011 printmaking! that is so awesome! i was thinking craigslist as well--but i have a cat i'm pretty partial to. i'm doubting there's a pet friendly room renter out there. may have to look for an apt. :[ July or august is a good time to head out there. you will fall in love! both schools offered me the same amout of finical aid. art center offered a renewable scholarship as well; while risd offered me a fellowship and a TA position. so, it pretty much evens out. i'm actually leaving for LA tomorrow to visit art center on thursday. hoping art center offers TA positions as well. it might tip the scale. renting a house with a bunch of people would be sweet, but like you I have no connections to make that happen. how many years is printmaking? is that what you majored in when you were in undergrad? I've always tried to take printmaking in school, but our school wasn't very interdisciplinary.
Fenceline Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 I'm going to RISD in graphic design (2-year track). Already submitted my on-campus housing deposit, but I will also be looking for somewhere more affordable but not too far away. I'm also coming from CA and still debating whether to fly or take my car for a very long trip.
joonam Posted April 12, 2011 Author Posted April 12, 2011 @ prickly pear im sure you can find a place on craigslist. ive been looking at a lot of houses that accept pets, mainly cats. so i dont think you should worry tooo much. i use to live in LA for a few years, then i moved to berkeley. art center is a very nice place! i hope you can get that TA position. printmaking is 2 years and yes my focus in undergrad was printmaking. i always wanted to be an architect, but i suck at math =/
joonam Posted April 12, 2011 Author Posted April 12, 2011 @ fenceline yeah the thing is off campus housing is soooo much cheaper than on campus. im looking for somewhere really close as well. 3 day drive is gonna be crazy!!!! well i don't have a car, but i don't know weather to rent one and drive up there, or fly. if i fly i don't know how to sent my stuff, mainly art supplies like my copper plates! i also have my tv and what not.... so i have no clue as to what i should do.
cate k Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 well, here's what I did--found another person who was moving from my state to the same school (or even one nearby) thru the housing dept at school--we rented a u-haul trailer together as I have a car, piled all our stuff in it and drove cross country, Shared expenses and driving. It was actually fun--we took 5 days and saw some sights on the way. great start to the school year. . @ fenceline yeah the thing is off campus housing is soooo much cheaper than on campus. im looking for somewhere really close as well. 3 day drive is gonna be crazy!!!! well i don't have a car, but i don't know weather to rent one and drive up there, or fly. if i fly i don't know how to sent my stuff, mainly art supplies like my copper plates! i also have my tv and what not.... so i have no clue as to what i should do.
prickly pear Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 @joonam_ you know, architecture doesn't involve as much math as people usually think. we leave that to the structural engineers. I need to start looking for a place and book a flight for next month. @cate k_that sounds like an awesome idea! maybe i can find someone in Texas to do that with.
joonam Posted April 13, 2011 Author Posted April 13, 2011 @ cate k that is a great idea! @ prickly pear lol but i reallllyyyy suck at math!!!! i booked my flight for the end of may! im soooo excited to finally visit! u should book ur flight now for late may, it comes out to be much cheaper.
prickly pear Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 @joonam_oh! that sounds good! I'll book mine for the end of may sometime this week! seriously, there's hardly any math. you really don't need it anymore with computers. it mostly learning to scale things up and down. the school I went to is heavily design based and less structural engineering.
SlipperySlope Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Howdy All, just got a confirmation email that my matriculation fee was received, so Its official, Ill be getting my mfa from RISD. I am also in the printmaking program Joonam, so odds are were gonna be buds. I drove down and visited the campus last friday and was so overwhelmed. Everything is so beautiful and pleasant! Word of warning, apparently campus is pretty shut down during the summers, including the library.
joonam Posted April 15, 2011 Author Posted April 15, 2011 @ prickly pear wow! thats great. well im still very young, maybe one day ill go back to school and study architecture =D @ slipperslope YAY another printmaker!!!!!!!!!!!! well at least i know one person in class! wats you focus in printmaking? i do mostly intaglio. i cant wait ill i visit the campus. when you visited, did u meet Mr. Raftery? did you get a tour of the facilities?
SlipperySlope Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 I work primarily in relief. I did meet Andrew, and he took my girlfriend and I on a tour of the school. I also got to meet some printmakers a year above us and see the graduate studios. They were so gregarious and welcoming, a noticeable change in attitude from other programs I have visited. We traded phone numbers and they offered to let me know of living opportunities and advice when I get closer to moving out there. Overall, I cant stress enough how comfortable and nice everything was, and am super stoked for the next couple of years.
joonam Posted April 16, 2011 Author Posted April 16, 2011 do u have a website? thats a good thing to hear. I cant wait!!!!!!!! even tho after a year of not being in school, things are gonna be rough at the beginning.
SlipperySlope Posted April 18, 2011 Posted April 18, 2011 I haven't updated in about a year because I am setting up some shows for the summer, but my website is artrod.net. Where did you get your undergrad? I graduated from Hampshire College in 2009.
joonam Posted April 19, 2011 Author Posted April 19, 2011 i love your work! i graduated form UCSC, after that i took sum time off to work and save for graduate school. sadly im still a lil short when it comes to fully being able to afford it, but well c wat happens. so how many people do you think we have in r class? about 10?
prickly pear Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 art center was amazing, but risd it is for me, for sure! woot! now to find a place to live...
joonam Posted April 20, 2011 Author Posted April 20, 2011 YAY!!!!!!!!! yeah im still looking for a room =/
prickly pear Posted April 20, 2011 Posted April 20, 2011 well, i've been calling around...and after talking with a few people it seems that it might be hard to find a good place to live right now. i haven't had any luck with finding a room on craigslist yet... i was told that in jan. most realtors know whose graduating and moving out in may...so the house/space is rented out pretty early. then some people lease a space starting in june, but sublet it for the summer to a friend so they have an apt waiting for them in august. so housing is pretty slim until july...but who knows what will be available. then again, that's the rap from some random guy i talked to on the phone. i might postpone my trip to providence until july. ugh. i didn't think it would be this hard to find a place to stay.
joonam Posted April 25, 2011 Author Posted April 25, 2011 damn thats not good! wait who did you call to get this info from? well i think its a good idea to go on july. i already found a room for august on craigslist. i told them that i wont be able to visit till may, and she said well keep in contact. so im happy about that. i also found this lady who owns several houses around the campus, she told me to call her when im in town, and shell show me the rooms that are gonna be available in august. besides those 2 lucky accidence, i haven't had much luck either. =/ maybe we could find a 2 bed apartment =D
