anōnumos Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 Hi. The question is plain and simple: what school you would choose for doing a PhD in computer science? (You may give an answer applicably to your sub-area of interest.) Arguments are highly appreciated! Thanx.
CSC Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 Assuming everything else is equal, UCSB no question. UCSB is a top notch program in one of the most beautiful spots in the country. Ohio is good too, but do you really want to live in Ohio? Plus, if you are doing CS you really want to be in California.
anōnumos Posted April 12, 2011 Author Posted April 12, 2011 (edited) Thanks CSC. UCSB is [..] in one of the most beautiful spots in the country. I'm thinking about the location as the last thing to consider. UCSB is a top notch program. What criteria have you used making such a judgement? Edited April 12, 2011 by anōnumos
kaza Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 if you are seriously considering ohio then i think you deserve to live there. it is a crime to not choose ucsb bluetourmaline, anōnumos, CSC and 2 others 2 3
edvolkov Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 (edited) UCSB is not a top notch program. But the are very strong in computer security. I think that their rise in USNews ranking (that is based on opinions) in the last years is heavily caused by increasing reputation of their seclab. Btw I'm not sure that you can get in this lab without having previous research exp in that field since all the people there are very strong in security. I don't know about any other fields. PS. I guess I know you from another forum Edited April 13, 2011 by edvolkov

UCSB is not a top notch program. But the are very storng in computer security. I think that their rise in USNews ranking in the last years is caused by increasing reputation of their seclab. Btw I'm not sure that you can get in this lab without having previous research exp in that field since all the people there are very strong in security. @edvolkov - Why is UCSB CS not considered a top notch program? Can someone please do a comprehensive comparison between the CS program in Ohio and in UCSB. I think this should come first before all the trivial factors.
edvolkov Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 (edited) It's not a top notch program since in the toppers the average citation count per faculty member (in last ten years) is something like 4 or 5k. And in UCSB it's only 2.3 k. Also in toppers the average h- and g-index for pubs in last ten years is something like 25 and 50 correspondingly. In UCSB these numbers are 18 and 38. edvolkov Posted April 13, 2011 Posted April 13, 2011 @edvolkov - Can you share the source from which the above were inferred. Thanks. I've calculated these numbers manually by using "Publish or Perish" program. You can do it by yourself For instance, compare MIT and UCSB.
