brunopaz Posted April 16, 2011 Posted April 16, 2011 I received an email from the University of Maryland stating that I had been recommended for admissions to the Graduate School. Good news, right? However, I am worried that the Graduate School will reject me because I have a 2.88 GPA and the Minimum GPA is a 3.0? What are my chances that the school with reject me? Wouldn't the program have denied me if my gpa was a problem? This whole process is driving me crazy. Any information is welcomed.
newms Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 Hang in there. You're right that the program wouldn't have recommended you for admission if they thought the Graduate School would reject you because of your GPA, so you are quite likely to be admitted. Usually the grad school mainly processes the paperwork, which can take a few days or even a few weeks. When did you get notice that you were recommended for admission?
sls144 Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 I agree with newms, they most likely wouldn't recommend you to the graduate school if they felt that the graduate school would deny you. I wouldn't be concerned.
brunopaz Posted April 17, 2011 Author Posted April 17, 2011 I was notified on Wednesday and was told that it would take about a week to hear from the Graduate School.
Milo_10011 Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 I was notified on Wednesday and was told that it would take about a week to hear from the Graduate School. Brunopaz, I'm in a similar spot. GPA min requirement 3.0, my undergrad GPA 2.7. However, I've already been to grad school (for a different subject), and I have other school work since. I actually went and asked the adviser if it would disqualify me outright. His response was that it would not. So I'd be very interested to hear what happens.
brunopaz Posted April 17, 2011 Author Posted April 17, 2011 Thank you Milo_10011 for your reply, I will let you know what happens. I'm really hoping for the best.
newms Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 I was notified on Wednesday and was told that it would take about a week to hear from the Graduate School. Ok, well don't worry then. I heard from my grad school a bit over 3 weeks after my department had notified me that they were recommending me for admission. If more than a week passes and you still don't hear from them, you could always ask the grad secretary at you department about it. I'm sure, though, that grad schools would be busy at this time with processing paperwork, so don't worry about it too much if they take a little time to process your admit. Congratulations and good luck.

My friend was in your same situation-- admitted to Maryland with below a 3.0. Usually what happens is you'll get a conditional acceptance and you'll need to maintain a certain GPA by a certain credit level. (I believe the terms and conditions of the conditional acceptance is determined by the ad comm and the chair of the committee needs to write a letter to the Grad School requesting an exception to the 3.0 rule.) I think the terms and conditions of his acceptance was he needed to maintain at least a 3.50 by 9 credits (or something like that). He had to wait until his grades came in before he could register for his second semester. It ended up being fine and the only difference was not being allowed to preregister for that second semester. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Edited April 17, 2011 by ZeChocMoose
wtncffts Posted April 17, 2011 Posted April 17, 2011 I agree with the advice that you needn't worry too much. However, I have read enough horror stories on this board to know that being rejected by the grad school for not meeting requirements does happen. I fervently hope that's not what happens here: all the best.
Milo_10011 Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Another thing to consider ... If the schools are going to be that anal about a GPA, do you really want to go there? I'm not trying to sound "sour grapes" here, but really, if I wanted arbitrary heartlessness and officiousness masquerading as professionalism, I could continue working for a corporation.
sassypenguin Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 For those of you with below 3.0 GPAs, how long did th Graduate school take to get back to you.
