Yeah, me too! I've been in Charleston, SC for the past few years, so the descriptions of the scary area around Temple and the cost of living aren't a change for me, but it's a huge city! Right now everythings pending on my S.O. getting a job. Wherever that is will determine where we go. I've heard Germantown is a nice, safe, suburb with good access to the campus. I'm aiming for there or Old City/University City if it's possible. Where are you looking at?

I"ll be at Temple come Fall. Pursuing a degree in Pharmacology, and getting nervous about trying to figure out where the heck I'm going to live.

After talking to one of the grad students in the department, they told me to either look in Manayunk, Fairmont, or Northern Liberties. I'd prefer living in Manayunk because of the ease of public transportation. I'm probably going to go up to Philadelphia sometime in July to actually look at apartments over a weekend. I've been in Durham, NC for since July 2010 and lived in Oxford, MS before that. Obviously, this is a pretty big jump in city size, so I'm hoping I don't end up in a place where I've got to dodge bullets. I'll likely end up living by myself when I move because I don't know many people, so any area of town that has studios where I can pay less than $900/month without living in a terrible area would be ideal.

I'll also be at Temple in the fall - in the Neuroscience department. I hear the Neuro students take core classes with the Med students for the first year or so - so maybe I'll see you in class OleMissRebGoinNorth? Has anyone gotten their official documentation yet? I got an email saying I'd been accepted last week, and they said I'd get stuff in the mail in a few weeks.

I haven't received any of my documentation yet. I sent in some matriculation fee and was told by the Dean of Graduate Studies for the Medical School that it would take a couple weeks to receive the fellowship information.

Any plans on when you are going to start looking for housing in Philly? I am not sure how early I should go up/sign a lease. I don't even really know when classes start. I am assuming they start the same time as the undergrads on the academic calendar online, but I still haven't received very much in the way of information from Temple.

Yeah, I still haven't gotten any info from the school. My landlord wants me out at the end of June, so I'll be moving up there July 1. I'm looking at the Germantown area for public transportation and being centrally located so my SO won't have too much of a commute once he gets a job. I'm getting antsy about not having info ... I feel like I should be registering for classes by now!

Luckily for me, I still have a pretty great job in North Carolina right now. I'm planning on going up to Philly to apartment hunt in early July, probably sometime around the 4th. After talking with a few graduate students, they told me that South Philly/ Art Museum areas are good for people who don't want to drive. I'll likely try to find a room with someone already because of how expensive it is. It's crazy to think that compared to my apartment in North Carolina, my rent will likely double or even triple in Philly. Hopefully, I'll get the information on my stipend beforehand to show to my landlord for the lease. The fact that it is taking this long to get the stipend contract together is starting to really piss me off.

So I guess I'm not the only one still waiting to get info about stipend payments, benefits, registration etc. I'm going into the Brain and Cognitive Science program in the Psych dept and they've yet to be very helpful. For example the graduate coordinator couldn't give me an exact amount for fees not covered by the tuition remission, they just said "It's never been more than 300 dollars or so". This did not impress me. And now that PA is potentialy cutting funding for Temple by 25 percent I worry the bureaucratic ineptitude might get worse, argh. As far as housing I'm thinking of living in Manayunk or University City, both are look affordable. I hear Fairmount is very nice but it seems a bit more expensive. Anyone have any thoughts about commuting safety, such as taking the regional rail/ broad st line at night? I have a feeling I won't be spending late nights in the library haha.

From what I've heard about the Broad Street Line from grad students, a lot of students and faculty use it and it is pretty safe. It's one of the major factors in me looking into living in South Philly, which is relatively cheap from what I've seen. I'm curious as to where you got the 25% cut information. Not that I doubt the validity of that statistic, I am just curious in finding more information. Cutting funds is a pretty unnerving topic. I got an email from the guy in charge of the Med School grad programs saying that my packet should arrive next week. I already got my flight booked for the July 4th weekend to Philly, so hopefully I'll find an apartment while I'm up there. If any fellow new grads are in the area, PM me and we can grab a drink to celebrate acceptance!

Wow, those articles are pretty terrifying. I wonder how much of those cuts will directly effect graduate programs? I know that part of my program is full tuition remission my first year until I am picked up by a research group, and I'd like to know that this will actually happen. As far as the areas in South Philly I'm looking in, I was directed to the Art Museum area as well as anywhere close to the Broad Street line. I've only really been looking on craigslist so far.

What most don't realize is that Temple only gets about 19% of their operating budget from the State of PA, so the 25% decrease isn't as enormous as it appears, maybe 4-5%? They cut the budget by 5% last year and resulted in a 2.9% tuition increase. Take a look at the snapshot below and read last year's budget for some insight:
