I've been in Charleston, SC for the past few years, so the descriptions of the scary area around Temple and the cost of living aren't a change for me, but it's a huge city! Right now everythings pending on my S.O. getting a job. Wherever that is will determine where we go. I've heard Germantown is a nice, safe, suburb with good access to the campus. I'm aiming for there or Old City/University City if it's possible. Where are you looking at? I"ll be at Temple come Fall. After talking to one of the grad students in the department, they told me to either look in Manayunk, Fairmont, or Northern Liberties. I'd prefer living in Manayunk because of the ease of public transportation. I'm probably going to go up to Philadelphia sometime in July to actually look at apartments over a weekend. I've been in Durham, NC for since July 2010 and lived in Oxford, MS before that. Obviously, this is a pretty big jump in city size, so I'm hoping I don't end up in a place where I've got to dodge bullets. I'll likely end up living by myself when I move because I don't know many people, so any area of town that has studios where I can pay less than $900/month without living in a terrible area would be ideal. I got an email saying I'd been accepted last week, and they said I'd get stuff in the mail in a few weeks. I haven't received any of my documentation yet. I sent in some matriculation fee and was told by the Dean of Graduate Studies for the Medical School that it would take a couple weeks to receive the fellowship information. I feel like I should be registering for classes by now! Luckily for me, I still have a pretty great job in North Carolina right now. I'm planning on going up to Philly to apartment hunt in early July, probably sometime around the 4th. After talking with a few graduate students, they told me that South Philly/ Art Museum areas are good for people who don't want to drive. I'll likely try to find a room with someone already because of how expensive it is. It's crazy to think that compared to my apartment in North Carolina, my rent will likely double or even triple in Philly. Hopefully, I'll get the information on my stipend beforehand to show to my landlord for the lease. For example the graduate coordinator couldn't give me an exact amount for fees not covered by the tuition remission, they just said "It's never been more than 300 dollars or so". This did not impress me. And now that PA is potentialy cutting funding for Temple by 25 percent I worry the bureaucratic ineptitude might get worse, argh. As far as housing I'm thinking of living in Manayunk or University City, both are look affordable. I hear Fairmount is very nice but it seems a bit more expensive. Anyone have any thoughts about commuting safety, such as taking the regional rail/ broad st line at night? I have a feeling I won't be spending late nights in the library haha. What most don't realize is that Temple only gets about 19% of their operating budget from the State of PA, so the 25% decrease isn't as enormous as it appears, maybe 4-5%? They cut the budget by 5% last year and resulted in a 2.9% tuition increase.
