eesj Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 Hello, Does anyone know the typical statistics for getting into the Engineer's Degree program at Stanford? Has anyone enrolled or completed the D.Eng EE at Stanford? I plan on applying for the Autumn quarter and want to know if I will be wasting $125 on this application. Thanks!
structural_eng Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 When you apply at Stanford for the Engineer's Degree if you get accepted you will be in the M.S. program. The Engineer's Degree comes after the completion of the M.S. with an additional 45 units of coursework which includes a thesis. You apply during your time doing the M.S. program and I think you have to be recommended or have a certain GPA in the M.S. program to move on to the Engineer's Degree. I'd say if you have a GPA over a 3.5 and GRE score with a quantitative score above 770ish you have a decent chance of being accepted to M.S. at Stanford of course it depends on schoolwork, LOR, and essays.

So my GPA is slightly below 3.5/4.0 (its 3.43/4.0--very low grade inflation at this university) and my GRE is (710/410/4 --Q/V/AW)... I do have a Stanford professor's letter of rec (very well known associate prof. at Stanford) and my other 2 recs are Stanford Ph.D. Actually, the Stanford professor who wrote my letter of rec specifically asked that I have a certain past professor write one of my references (since they know each other)---which I did. My SoP was critiqued by a Stanford professor who will be my Co-Adviser and he felt it was well written and demonstrates all pertinent points (R&D interest, experience, and professional goals). Additionally, I am a U.S. citizen, have worked a year long Co-Op during my undergrad, and have been working in a research group for a very large(and well known) engineering firm for 4.5 years. I have 2 pending U.S. Patents (1 listed as inventor, 1 listed as Co-inventor). I am not asking for funding/financial aide, since my company has offered a fellowship to pay for the $50K tuition each year until I complete the degree. I know my GPA sucks, but hopefully other aspects of my application (SoP, LoRs, and experience) help reviewers overlook these....Anyways all I can do is wait it out
George2248 Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I am in the same position. Since the online application ask you to specify of you are applying for an MS or Eng Degree. I am still not sure where to apply, do I have a better chance to get accepted if I apply to a MS. If that is the case, could I apply later to the Eng Degree once I started the MS? I would like to share also my profile to see if I am competitive, I dont know if this is the place to post it?

eesj Posted November 2, 2011 Author Posted November 2, 2011 George you need to have a Stanford professors letter of rec to apply to the Eng D. If you don't have that I would just apply to the MS, since off the bat you are not meeting the minimum reqs to apply.

I do not have a reccomendation letter from stanford, I am an international student. I did not know it was a requirement. Do you know if it is possible to apply to the Eng Degree after I start the MS?
George2248 Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 This is my profile: · I finished my BS in Civil Engineering 4 months ago in a Top University in Caracas, Venezuela. I graduated top of a 32 students class and my GPA is 17/20. Class GPA 13/20 · I have no background or experience in the US education system. I just studied English for 6 months in LA after I graduated from Highschool. · I have been working in my family Construction Company for about a year. I did my intership there. Great working experience letter of recommendation · I did a research thesis in order to obtain my BS, its subjects related to construction planning and control (Lean Construction) · I have relatively good LOR, specially the professor I did my thesis with, but since they are professors that do not speak English fluently I am a little afraid they might not be perfec · My GRE scores are: 740 - 800 MATH , 630 - 730 VERBAL I am planning to apply to the MS in Construction Engineering and Management at Stanford. Also the MS in Engineering and Project Management at Berkeley. What do you think?

Sorry, actually I am not to sure if you need a stanford prof to recommend you for the construction management program ( I am applying for EE). For Stanford's grad programs they are more selective on external applicants as well (e.g. they have a higher threshold to meet on the ad comm score card). Maybe someone else can comment?

eesj Posted November 3, 2011 Author Posted November 3, 2011 I read that it's about 1/5 to 1/4 of external applicants ( for CS). I am assuming that it is fairly consistent amongst the engineering and CS departments.

I am not yet sure whether to apply in Stanford.

I honestly cannot say since I am still in the application process myself. Looking at the results section it seems that MSME and MSCE are much more competitive than the MSEE program.
