superchuchubu Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 I just don't understand how something so big doesn't have a set deadline for the announcement. We all submitted our applications on time, now how can it possible take NSF 5+ months to figure this out? And it is not just about this year...every year it takes them 5+ months! I used to work as a consultant and had the City of New York as a client, and man, government is the most inefficient system ever.
Falmouth Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Remember these are professors doing the reviewing. They are not full time employees of NSF and it must take a lot of time to get the reviews done and all coordinated.

caezar86 Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Well, at least we've blown last year way out of the water in terms of number of posts.

Falmouth Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 So explain the whole process since you're an expert. How do they all get ranked and then the selected groups reviewed a third time ? How are the areas weighted and what is the impact of underrepresented groups ? Just trying to understand the process. Thanks

Then the top third or so go on to have another review (that's why some people talk about having two vs three reviews). That's all I know. Not really rocket science... The government does the rest. Hope that helps
blah2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Well, at least we've blown last year way out of the water in terms of number of posts. Yes, we've blown last year out of the water in terms of completely useless and inane posts.
Falmouth Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Just want to also say that I believe there will be more awards this year. Not from the stimulus, but because it's in the news release for both the 09 and 10 NSF budget requests.
caezar86 Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Yes, we've blown last year out of the water in terms of completely useless and inane posts. Inane, maybe, but I disagree that it's completely useless. I think these posts are making a lot of us feel better that we have others to commiserate with.
krynn9000 Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Hey guys, I've been reading this post for a couple weeks and I'm breaking down and posting. I feel everyone's pain here about the waiting, and feeling like you aren't going to win. I am really impressed by everyone's research experience, especially in undergrad. All I did was write a "thesis" to graduate with distinction in electrical engineering at Ohio State. I don't know how I can compare to those who have actually gotten something published as undergrads. Then people start talking about how grades and GRE don't matter. I think my proposal is very good though. What do you guys think? Thanks again, misery loves company!

curious zygote Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 All I know is that when you click on the Award Offers and Honorable Mentions List this now comes up: 2009 Offered Award List * The list of Awardees and Honorable Mention recipients for the year you have selected is not yet available. It's been up since our freak out last night. I chose not to mention it because people had already said they weren't going to sleep, I didn't want to add to that with more guesstimation . But I was SO SURE that everything would be up today... I was actually shocked when I woke up and checked and nothing had changed... If the link is now going by default to the 2009 list then there is something going on... I swear this is new as of last night at like 1 am EST.

It would be awesome if you're correct. You don't notice all the little details until you start to freak out and find 1,001 things you didn't see before. All I mean is that I don't remember clicking on that link, and having that come up as a default in blue. I just remember being able to pick a year and look through... but maybe I am now noticing b/c they took 2008 down...

curious zygote Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 How odd, both good and bad news for my sanity...

superchuchubu Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Well, I called again. And was told there was almost no chance it would go up this week, and a small chance it would go up next week. It is going to be so sad if we all spend every day of the next week miserable and desperately waiting for the awards list, and it doesn't go up until the week after. A whole week of our young lives wasted. Oh well, I don't really see any other option!

A whole week of our young lives wasted. Oh well, I don't really see any other option! I wish they would just let us access are rating sheets now. This would save them and most of us tons of time, since people with only two sheets could move on with their lives. It would only get worse for those with three sheets. Loosing ~70% of the applicants would help free up their time a lot. Otherwise we will keep calling and bothering them in large numbers, and it will only get progressively worse as it gets later and later.
blargh Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 hey - i've been reading all of these posts to keep myself entertained. guess i'll have to actually do work for the rest of the day though as i assume the nsf is a 9-to-5ish kind of place. good luck everyone!
finest_engineering Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 I called up mit eecs grad admissions and my request actually moved up the chain 3 times. It was funny. The first lady said they don't change the decision once its made, then she asked me what fellowship and I said ndseg and she said hold on let me talk to my boss. Same thing happened with the next lady, finally the third person said no. I e-mailed the professor there who had asked a professor of mine about me and has similar research interests to my own. She didn't respond to my e-mail in the past so I won't be shocked if she doesn't again. Doesn't look like the NSF decisions are coming today.
