bioangele Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 yeah, definitely not right. i was asked to change mine before the review committees even met. Lol. I'm also very confident - today when I spilled a box of pipet tips they aligned to spell "CONGRATULATIONS GRFP!"
redeye Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 So who here is actually confident in their applications? I think I'm competitive I'm not sure if I am in that elite 12% of my major. I really have no idea. I have a strong publication/collaboration record (so strong recommendation letters also), worked in managerial role after undergrad, and I am proposing further collaboration with scientists in Latin America...BUT I went through some growing pains as a young undergrad, and I'm afraid that my old GPA and GRE scores will come back to haunt me. It seems like winners have flawless backgrounds. My goal was just to throw my hat into the ring and see what happened...no expectations. But after investing *so* much time on crafting those essays, I can't help but want it badly.
nsfneedstohurryup Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 In reference to the hack attempts (while people are logged in as themselves): "This Government Computer System is provided as a public service by the National Science Foundation. Big brother (sister? [we all know there arent too many sisters out there who are comp sci]) is watching. https://www.fastlane-beta.nsf.gov/index.jsp (bottom left side of page)
blah2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Addtionally, I'd rather get flat out rejected instead of honorable mention. Honorable mention would make me pissed that I didn't spend that extra week to make things one level better. Kind of like getting alternate on the NDSEG.... It's also something i wouldn't put on my cv. irrational I know... .

Such a small, small distance between $0 and $120,000 with an HM...it would get to me.
blah2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Or in the case of a NDSEG alternate, one person stands in the way between $0 and $180000. Although I would slap the person ahead of me for not taking it... and then hug them
beaches90 Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I'm about to cry after reading the Ford thread. It looks like I didn't get it. If I didn't get Ford, then I probably didn't get NSF. Someone please, please tell me that I'm still a worthy person. I wanted it so, so bad.
blah2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Don't lose hope!, the process is very very random. I know a Hertz finalist (the most elite fellowship, 1 of 12-15 per year) and a Hertz winner that didnt get the NSF.

blah2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I'm pretty sure this morning's false alarm killed a good majority of the posters in this thread...=).
marshie Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 So in response to the password thing, I really don't know what to think, I'm just going to offer my 2 cents. I found this excerpt on the Fastlane website- If you are a non-financial user your FastLane password expires after 365 days of use (Table 1). If you are a financial user your FastLane password expires after 120 days of use. When you attempt to log in, you will be required to change your password. You cannot use your last three passwords. The weird thing is, that I know I created my account in August 2007. I reapplied this year, so I remember updating my password in August of 2008. According to this, my password shouldn't have expired by now, however it expired around 2 weeks ago. Not that it means a lot or anything. Its just a comment. Has everyone's passwords changed?

This is exactly what I was trying to mention. My password should have expired in October 2009 since the last time I updated it was October 2008. But I was asked to change my password about several days ago.
joefalk Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget/fy2009/nsf.html It says 30% increase for GRFP.It says 30% increase for GRFP.

redeye Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Try having 2. At least you had two HMs to build off of for this year, a good indication you're on the right track. This is my last shot I'm afraid, so an HM won't help me.
sam45 Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Seriously, guys the password change doesn't mean anything.
DrBones Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I'm pretty sure this morning's false alarm killed a good majority of the posters in this thread...=). It certainly destroyed my spirit. I honestly (and I mean honestly) am done worrying. I've come to terms with the fact that I have no power over the date and time of the awarding. I nonchalantly await that little message in my inbox...
zetetic Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Seriously, guys the password change doesn't mean anything. I totally agree, however I was just asked to change my password (just now as I logged in, after I had read all of the above posts on this subject) as well and I know I changed it at the beginning of this application period (October or so). I don't think this means that we got the GRF, but it may mean that they recently changed something in their own systems, e.g. possibly reset a certain timer and people that hadn't changed their passwords prior to a certain date had to change it again. Such an action could have been caused on accident (doubtful) or due to a request by whatever network and information security team Fastlane has overseeing its operations (according to standard IT practice; I worked in IT security for three years so this is just from my experience). I logged in earlier this morning (~8am) and was not asked to do this at that time.
vice Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I'm fairly confident, I got a HM last year and have done a ton more to improve my application. If I didn't get it I would really have a "OMG what more do you want from me," feeling.

If I didn't get it I would really have a "OMG what more do you want from me," feeling. My situation is the same, and the more I re-read my essays, the more confident I become. I'm setting myself up for a huge disappointment.
just.for.the.grfp Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I've been watching this thread for weeks, and I finally decided to join in the fun. So here I am, entertain me.
