Classical Archaeology?

Is there anyone around applying to Classical Archaeology programs? I'm applying to programs housed in Classics, Art & Archaeology, and Interdisciplinary programs... and seem to be the only one on this forum or any of the LJ communities. I also haven't heard anything from any of my 8 schools and am trying not to worry about that too much... it's early yet, but some of my schools have had my application since the middle of December!

Am I alone around here?

I only overlap with you at WashU (still no word) - I applied to Brown, but to the Institute of Archaeology, not Classics. I know someone applying to Classics programs who also hasn't heard, but I don't think he applied to any of your schools, either.

Every school on all of our lists are getting how many tens of applications for each space they're offering... where are all these people?!

I checked it (coincidentally, ha) just a few hours before I got the letter in the mail, and there was nothing on the page that indicated any status other than submitted. (I've since deleted the link.) Since you haven't heard anything yet, that could be a good sign?

Best of luck!!!

I applied to 9 Classics PhD programs. For those of you still waiting, perhaps the following info will be helpful:

Yale - admitted - they emailed in early February - I visited in mid February - offered admission in late February (Full funding)

Princeton - admitted - they emailed in early February - I visited in mid February - offered admission in late February (Full funding)

Penn - email acceptance in early February (Full funding)

UVA - email acceptance in early February (Full funding)

WashU - email acceptance in early February (Full funding)

UNC - Email acceptance March 1 (no funding)

Harvard - Waitlisted (10 admissions, 2 waitisted) Notices sent via postal mail 3-1

Boston - rejected

Columbia - still have not heard anything

Let me know if this helps. Good luck everyone!

Wow! You got into Yale, Princeton, Penn, WashU, and UCLA w/ funding!!! Congrats! Do you find it weird that UNC (Chapel Hill, I assume) didn't give you funding? I still haven't heard a word from UNC and they emailed rejections about 2 weeks ago.

If you feel comfortable doing so, would you mind giving me an idea of why you think you were a good applicant to these schools? I only applied to two of your schools (UNC - have not heard, WashU - rejected). I am just curious as to who gets into such programs and why? For example, do you come from an Ivy League school?

BTW, I know someone who has heard from Columbia.

I'm not sure how best to answer your question without revealing my identity - That seems to be an issue on this forum when too much biographical info is shared.

I would say that it was a combination of stellar grades, multiple degrees (undergrad and grad), several scholarship awards, study abroad experience, assistantships (teaching and research), good GRE's, great letters, an MA thesis that treated a completely untapped and unexpected subject, and a strong personal statement.

Other than that, I would say that I was blessed by an angel.

Really, so many qualified people apply to these programs - it is really a crapshoot if any one of us is successful.

As far as Brown's rejection and UNC's lack of funding are concerned, my adviser thinks that these schools don't believe I will really attend their school because most likely I will be offered admission by a better program. Apparently, schools are only allowed to make a certain number of offers (both waitlist and otherwise) - once this has happened, they cannot go down the list to rejectees.

So for example - I know a story about two top Classics programs (Let's call them A and B). A and B each had the same 7 admitted students. For some reason, after their visits to each of these schools, all but one student accepted B's offer. Since A had nobody else to draw on for their entering class save for the one student who accepted- (I don't believe they used wailists at the time) - they had to get special permission from the grad school to go down the list. Soooo - schools don't want to waste their offers of admission on those whom they don't believe will come.

UNC's lack of funding is tantamount to a rejection - However, they did say we are working on getting you funding - but as of now - you are on the waitlist. Perhaps if I had accepted their offer, they would have found the funding.

Otherwise, before my adviser filled me in on this info, I had assumed that I was just not a good fit for Brown and not at the top of UNC's list - that made sense to me. But I suppose the other factors make sense as well... especially in light of my other acceptances. But who really knows? Only the grad school gods know.

As far as where I am leaning? I'm not ready to reveal that yet... still have some things to consider.

Oh and about that person at Columbia: Were they admitted or rejected? I still haven't heard anything yet.

Good luck! Keep me posted if you hear anything. :D

I might be. I'm still deciding between WashU and Toronto. Did you visit yet? What did you especially like about the program?
