Hi Everyone,

I have been granted admission to University of Alabama at Birmingham and Georgia State University, Fortunately, I got funding from both UAB and GSU with UAB funding being better. Based on ranking of CS program, living cost, job opportunities after graduation etc - which university would you go?

Any input is much appreciated.

I'll be going to UAB for neuroscience.. For my program, they have good funding and good facilities. I can't speak for CS, but I like the school and the people there. The city is okay.. I'm from a big city, so it's going to be a weird transition for me, but I spent a summer there and it wasn't so bad. Cost of living is low compared to where I live now. Actually, I am going to be buying myself a house after a few months living in temporary housing. They're reeeeeally cheap right now and I have a fiance who's dying to do handiwork, haha. I can't speak for GSU, though.

This probably didn't help you at all, but UAB seems like a good school to me. :P

Georgia State is administratively dysfunctional. Don't know about UAB.

Also, while both are technically urban, GSU feels more urban: little to no green space, big multistory buildings packed together, etc. I've generally heard nice things about Birmingham, and it has seemed pleasant on my brief visits there. Given that they're giving you more money, unless the programs are ranked WAY differently, I'd probably go to UAB.

I went to GSU for my undergrad and although its not as "green," I ended up liking it because it's diverse and it's not your typical college campus. You share the campus with fellow businessmen/businesswoman going to work, homeless people (yea its not a safe campus, so it was kinda annoying when I did live in downtown Atlanta that I had to really watch where I was going), and your regular college folk walking to their classes. Some people I know did not like GSU and left so I guess it depends what kind of person you are. Personally, I liked it because it was a nice change from the college that I transferred from (it was in the middle of nowhere and people would literally ask me "what kind of indian are you? the one with the dot or the one with the feathers?" or "Are there cars in India?"...and once I snapped and I told them that I am American and they had the hardest time understanding that...)

I would have to agree that it is administratively dysfunctional and I would not want to go back to GSU for a Master's degree for that reason. Once I went to a career counselor thinking that I would be helped because I could not make up my mind about what I wanted to do. After two meetings with him, he gave up on me and was nowhere to be seen.

Anyways, I have no knowledge of UAB...
