Salve, medievally-inclined students amongst you:

As I mentioned on here a while back, I am looking at both Religion and History doctoral programs, as I am primarily interested in medieval religious history. I have a pretty good idea of the relevant Religion programs out there, but am not as certain on History. I'm particularly interested in devotional movements or "mysticism" in Germany and the Netherlands in the late medieval world, but I also have interests and background in Christian-Jewish interaction and the Christian East.

Here are some of the History departments I've been looking at:

Notre Dame (esp. John Van Engen)

U of Chicago (esp. Rachel Fulton)

Fordham

Yale

U Michigan Ann Arbor

U Penn?

Thoughts on any of these, or suggestions of additional schools?

There always seems to be at least one or two religious/medieval history people on these boards each year- take a look in the past threads for them. :)

I've been prowling about, but haven't found anything specific so far. Most of the medievalists on the boards here seem to be in Lit departments...

I cannot help you in what you are asking. But I am also studying religious history, especially "mysticism" in Islamic societies (basically Ottoman, and early Turkic states). Even though I am currenlty writing my MA thesis on the 16th century mysticism, I am planning to apply for medieval religious history. For Islamic history, Princeton, St louis, UT Austin, CUNY are good programs. Since I want a History degree, I am not considering of applying to Religion programs. It is good to see there are people who want to study medieval history. Good luck!

I'm more interested in medieval government, rather than religious history but just wanted to say that Notre Dame seems likes a great choice for your interests. Also got a chance to meet Van Engen who seemed like a lovely person and people I talked to really liked him as a supervisor. Not sure if you're considering Medieval Studies programs too, but at least for Notre Dame you might want to take a look at the structure of the programs in the History Department and through the Institute and see which you might like more, if you haven't got a chance to yet.

Yep, quite a bit depends on whether you want to get a degree in medieval history or medieval studies.

Your list is looking good. I'd also suggest taking a look at Rutgers and Saint Louis University.
