csperson Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 http://www.cs.virginia.edu/~evans/april1/grads-exam.pdf I find this amusing. So UVA CS actually decided reject like 1/3 of the grad students they sent acceptance letters to? Is this a joke or not? Ok, I honestly don't know...

Ok, I honestly don't know...&lt;br /&gt; Maybe you should see the date in the URL - April 1st. This is also a good tip that the pdf is a joke (not only that's dated in 2005):<br />&quot;Pete Gillen has offered to conduct a basketball shoot-around tomorrow morning to determine which of the remaining students should be unadmitted."It's getting funnier after that Edited July 2, 2011 by Ninevah

OH YEAH Posted July 2, 2011 Posted July 2, 2011 Ally Hacker got into Berkeley, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, and MIT, and she is considering UVA?!?!?!
csperson Posted July 2, 2011 Author Posted July 2, 2011 (edited) Ally Hacker got into Berkeley, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, and MIT, and she is considering UVA?!?!?! A UVA CS professor I met did say that they have no trouble getting really good students, including MIT quality students. I definitely wouldn't go to UVA if I got into MIT, no matter what, even though UVA is still decent. But I have friends who chose much lesser ranked schools only because those lower ranked schools offered them much more money. If UVA really admitted only 37 (or 25) graduate students in that year, then UVA must have a ridiculously low acceptance rate. I wonder how many applicants they got. Usually top CS programs get over 1000 (or even over 2000) applicants. So based on the acceptance rate, UVA is as hard to get into as Stanford/Berkeley/CMU/MIT??? Edited July 2, 2011 by csperson
OH YEAH Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 Oh, I am sure UVA has a great program, it was just a joke... I wouldn't put too much stock into acceptance rates though. I am sure universities are good at figuring out who they have a chance at getting and don't spuriously give acceptances to those that they think they will lose to other universities. I know at the undergrad level the high ranked schools do this all of the time to keep yield rates high/acceptance rates low...
