  1. Her resume says "earned her Bachelor of Arts in American History from Yale University in 1990 and a Master’s degree in English Literature from the University of London in 1990." Two degrees in different fields from two different schools in two different countries in the same year? Possible? But not likely? Who knows, maybe this woman was super smart in her classes? She is a Yale graduate... Most people can't even get into Yale, and she managed to graduate from Yale?
  2. Did the OP post the stuff on the above link? I thought she wanted to be anonymous. Or maybe the name in the link is false. The prof's name seems real.
  3. The OP just posted on the result page that a professor lied about writing her a recommendation. Apparently this is about something that happened 5 years ago... Just found out that the OP has been posting sooooooo many other strange things over all the internet. This is seriously amusing.
  4. I have NO idea how schools determine which applicants are the potential drop outs...
  5. I just arrived at Madison. This place is worse than I thought. Seems like a very boring city. I'll be here for the next 5 years? This makes me kind of depressed. Anybody else feels this place is boring?
  6. For PhD, you definitely want to go to UMich. I could be wrong, but it seems that for MS, UCI is ok too.
  7. Why do you say this person is high-risk (dropping out early)? I'm very curious
  8. i went to a lowly ranked state school for undergrad and really wanted to go to a top school for CS PhD. I had a ~4.0 undergrad GPA but no research experience. I was told it may be easy for me to get into a top 20 school for MS, but no chance for a top 20 school PhD. So the first time I applied to MS programs only and just received my MS at a top 20 school. I did a lot of research during my MS. Last fall I applied to a bunch of relatively good PhD programs and got into several of them. So... You could just try to apply to a MS program at a good school, and gain some research experience. Then you may be able to get into good PhD programs easy. One disadvantage is that many top schools don't offer full financial support to MS students. I have talked with several CS professors at top schools. Basically, they said if you have no research experience where you did something cool, then you are screwed for admission to the PhD program. They said they wanted to see recommendation letters saying you have research potential and describe the research you did kind of in detail. They don't really care about grades/GRE at all, unless you seriously screwed up. Lower ranked schools seem to really care about GRE/GPA though.
  9. This Utah prof offered some very helpful info. However, I bet many profs would disagree with what he thought about GPA. I mean, how many profs are wiling to take a student with a 2.0 GPA?
  10. Hey guys, I realize applying for PHD just to get a free MS is an unethical thing to do, and I wouldn't do it myself. But, do you guys realize a large number of people are already doing this? many of my friends did this. In a way, this is a common thing.
  11. a lot of non-top CS programs fully fund MS students
  12. My friend gave me these advice links when I was applying to CS PhD programs. Just thought it would be useful for sharing these with new applicants. Most of these come from professors at top CS programs. UMASS prof http://prisms.cs.uma...r/cs-admissions Virginia prof http://www.cs.virgin...rospective.html CMU prof www.cs.cmu.edu/~harchol/gradschooltalk.pdf UMD prof http://www.cs.umd.ed.../gradstudy.html Wisconsin http://pages.cs.wisc...e/GradSchoolFAQ UIC student http://www.cs.uic.ed...c/uic-apply.txt UCSD prof http://idleprocess.w...of-your-dreams/ Brown prof - this is for recommendation writers, but still has useful info for applicants http://www.cs.brown....d-School-Recos/ U Washington prof http://www.cs.washin...mmendation.html Cornell prof http://www.cs.cornel...2-gradapps.html Columbia dept http://www.cs.columb...d/faqs/applying
  13. GRE was one of the more important things they considered? This makes no sense. People who really want to do research should not apply to this school. If I were a prof, I wouldn't look at the GRE at all. It shows absolutely no research potential about the applicant. Especially the verbal score, what does it have to do with CS research?
  14. This CS professor says " There is certainly a minimum verbal, but that is usually 500" http://prisms.cs.uma...r/cs-admissions I know guys who got into Berkeley with like 300ish verbal though
