Pauli Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Hey, does anyone know how we can see our reviews for EAPSI? I just read mine for the GRFP and I'm dying to know if the EAPSI reviewers agree with my GRFP reviewers (for similar, though not identical, proposals). Thanks! They're found in the Proposal Status section on NSF FastLane, but the program coordinators haven't posted the review up yet. It's still showing up as pending for this year (I can still see my reviews for my rejected proposal from a couple years ago though). You could bug Elena to see if you can get those reviews directly from the program reviewers.
dirac1991 Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Oh, hey. Just came across this thread now. Looks like I'm the only one replying from the Taiwan program. For those of you who got accepted to the other programs (e.g., Japan, China), have you guys already created your online communities (e.g., Facebook group)? The Taiwan group already set up their Facebook group and Google custom map. I'm pretty interested in how the other programs are group coordinating. Edit: BTW, for those at the orientation, I'm the brown dude with the black cap wearing the "Taiwan" sign to rally the troops from the Taiwan program, lol. I'm part of a Facebook group for EAPSI-Japan fellows. I didn't see a group for Taiwan. You should start one =)
Pauli Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 We I'm part of a Facebook group for EAPSI-Japan fellows. I didn't see a group for Taiwan. You should start one =) But we doooooo have one! http://www.facebook.com/groups/186522478131456/ We've been lazy though since we're only roughly half membership now (only 15 out of 25 joined so far). Hope your Facebook group's faring better, lol.

FernandoPR Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Considering that Facebook is blocked in China, I am guessing a Facebook group might not be the best option for our group.
PhDiddy Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 (edited) Hey, so I am quite sure I was rejected from China considering orientation is over and I haven't heard anything. Why can't they give me the dignity of a rejection letter/email or change my status on fastlane? I spent a lot of time on that application, they could at least give me a response to my emails or phone calls :-( As another poster mentioned, the "radio silence" is upsetting. Good luck to the rest of you who were accepted!! I am sure you will have a great experience!! Edited April 3, 2012 by PhDiddy Kexin Renlei 1
Pauli Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Thanks Pauli! Guess I'll be patient. I feel ya, Tsujiru. I really want to see the reviews too so that I can liberally "borrow" the working sections into another NSF grant propsoal. :/ Considering that Facebook is blocked in China, I am guessing a Facebook group might not be the best option for our group. Oh, right! I'm so used to Facebook that I forget about that part. I heard that Google services like Google Groups are also rendered useless in China? Hey, so I am quite sure I was rejected from China considering orientation is over and I haven't heard anything. I totally understand, PhDiddy. This seems to have been a recent thing, as previous years didn't have such a delay. The first reason was that there was a lot of applicants who applied, and the second reason is that I believe one of the main coordinators for the program this year is relatively new and is still trying to figure out the ins and outs, so has been delayed in sending out responses. People who got in only knew due to tentative offers and orientation trip details. Is this your first time applying to EAPSI? I know that many people who applied didn't get in until their second attempt, or only got in their first attempt due to factors such as connections (e.g., advisor knew host researcher) or had research area specialized only to a specific host country (e.g., New Zealand). Hopefully, the NSF EAPSI 2013 thread will give opportunities for those applicants to hear from how the NSF EAPSI 2012 awardees did their apps, and I'd be glad to help out in that thread.
Tsujiru Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Hey guys. So still no reviews up yet, but I do have a question. At the orientation they talked a lot about traveling either before or after the 10 week period. It sounded like it was fairly common and they didn't have a problem with it so long as it didn't interfere with research and we didn't overstay 90 days. But when I went to go book my ticket there was all kinds of language about how if we wanted arrival/departure dates different from those defined by EAPSI we would have to seek permission from both JSPS and our host researcher. Honestly, I feel a little silly writing to my very busy host just to say, "Hey so I'd like to visit some friends in Tokyo before orientation starts, are you cool with that?" I sent a question off to Elena but I wonder how others have dealt with this? Thanks!
FernandoPR Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 In my case, my host asked me if I could arrive a few weeks early. Additionally, I wanted to visit a few friends before starting work. The only thing that they told me at orientation was that I had to get an invitation letter for the Visa from my host, since EAPSI wouldn't be responsible for me before the program starts. So I told my host when I planned to arrive and when I planned to start working. This might be a bit different for Japan. Still, I don't think most hosts will mind you telling them that you will arrive earlier to do some tourism or to visit friends.
Tsujiru Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Yeah, we don't need visas as long as we don't stay longer than 90 days. Well, I guess I'll write them. Anyone know who our contact for JSPS is?
Phding it Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 I emailed Elena and Akiko after getting an informal message from my host saying that it was fine to show up early. That part was easy. Arranging the trip through KNT with a schedule and decent price is the more trying part. Tsujiru are you on the facebook group? Some people have been discussing it there too. Yeah, we don't need visas as long as we don't stay longer than 90 days. Well, I guess I'll write them. Anyone know who our contact for JSPS is?
Tsujiru Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 Thank you! No I gave up facebook eons ago, but maybe for the sake of EAPSI I will rejoin
Tsujiru Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 OK, so I just got my official award letter from EAPSI and it says the award period goes until May 31, 2013. Does this mean I cannot accept EAPSI and GRFP funding, even if I had planned to wait on GRFP until September? I want to do the ethical thing, but I'm also hoping to get a new car soon and boy it would be nice to have that 5k. Thanks for your thoughts!
Pauli Posted May 27, 2012 Posted May 27, 2012 Until May 31st, 2013? That probably just means that it's in the annual funding period, but since the grant only goes until the end of summer, there doesn't seem to be any conflict at all. Of course, it's always good to contact Elena regarding this, lol.
