inlleducationgal Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 I have no experience in psychology (I took two courses as an undergrad and now work in a disability rights org. so have some experience with mental health issues professionally) and I want to find an MA program that will not require me to have any prior psych experience--or at least minimal coursework I can take elsewhere first. I also haven't taken the GRE and prefer not to if possible. I know this is a stretch, but any tips?
inlleducationgal Posted July 7, 2011 Author Posted July 7, 2011 pretty much any MA is suitable for ppl w/ no psych experience. I got my BA in Tv & Film studies and i got accepted to an MA program in psychology. The only requirement is that they usually have a set of courses that you MUST take if your dont have a BA in psych just so you can qualify to apply to the MA. Although schools will require you to take those pre-req course at their university. Kinda sucks i know. This is what i did. I didnt even take the GREs either but i still got in. Just look into which school you'd want to go to and check out their requirements for applying. Hope this helps Thanks! That's really helpful, actually. Where are you going to school? I'm on the West Coast and would like to stay here, but most of the programs I've looked into (probably about 6) do require some kind of background in psychology. I've found two that do not and require you to take one or two courses first in the program, which is fine, but both of those programs have other issues (like taking 3-4 years vs. 2 years).

You would need at least a few basic psych courses for to fulfill the masters program pre-reqs (probably on the website). Are you planning on going on for a PhD? A masters in general psych might not be worth the money unless you go for the PhD later on.
