I am currently beginning my 4th year as a Design | Media Arts major at UCLA. I know I definitely will want to go to a graduate program in graphic/communications design at some point, and am unsure as to what type of work is expected in the applying portfolio, especially since I am an undergrad applying right after receiving my bachelor's degree. I am struggling with either applying straight from undergrad or taking a year to hone my skill and develop more work.

I am aware that schools are looking for a combination of student, personal, and professional work. Depending on the school, I also know that they are looking for thought processes and concepts as well as developed and completed work. Is this true? Do they want to see notes/sketches/processes?

I have been a full-time student as an undergrad and have kept a part-time job relating to art and graphic design all my 4 years of study. Does employment factor into any decision making? Does actually having a job related to your field of study while you are in school show some type of professional maturity for grad schools? I would hope so. After reading some other posts, it has made it seem that undergrads directly applying to grad programs have slim chances.

I guess the overall question I am trying to answer is, what are your guys' experiences with applying straight from undergrad or taking time off before applying?

Thanks in advanced.

You need to pose this question to the undergrad advisor in your area at UCLA. They can help you better than anyone.

If an academic position is what you're looking for, graphic design is the way to go. There are way more positions than there are qualified applicants.

Hi Y'all. I just found out I have an interview at Cal Arts and am incredibly nervous about the interview. Does anyone know what their interview is like?

Thanks,

Rachel

did you see the interview date changed?

Do you know if they do exceptions? I'd like to keep the original date of March 8th as I have booked everything already.
