Josholas Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 Is anyone applying to or currently in an MFA program while simultaneously balancing a family? I, myself, have a 9-month old and a wife. I'm not sure how I'm going to do it. Any tips out there? Am I the only one?
berto Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 i have a 7 month old, thinking the same thing, im justing saving a lot of cash to pay rent etc for a year so far.
Josholas Posted January 19, 2012 Author Posted January 19, 2012 Is anyone aware of programs that help with child care costs?
Hicks Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 I started my MFA with two kids and had my third during the program. It was hard at times but overall it wasn't too bad. My wife was okay with me having an odd schedule. I don't know that I have any particular advice just wanted to assure you that it is doable.
Onedayx3 Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 I am a single mom, with a 5 year old. Talking to my long-term boyfriend about comming with me and taking a job wherever is a frequent discussion. However, I have to plan to do it on my own...with dependent. I'm trying to pay off my car before I go, cutting that monthly expense....and just working and saving all I can.
berto Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 I was checking different types of financial aid from the universities and notice a child care assistance program. Looks like they help pay cost for day care etc. any one out there receive this aid before?

berto Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 What school(s) did you see that offered? The University of Washington has it under the student financial aid section, University of Oregon had it under the Human resources section. It led me to assume all major universities probably offer something like it. Another reason I am happy I applied to big Universities, more funding opportunities, more resources. It led me to check out graduate family housing too, University of oregon had some cute places with mad decent rent!

And yes, the family housing at U. Oregon is one of the things that attracted us the most initially.
