wuerzburg Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I have noticed on the results page that two people have posted about a "recruitment weekend" at Emory. It seems to be following a pattern from last year. From this information I am assuming two things. 1. Emory fly you out before making offers. I am not sure but it seems to be that they conduct get to know you sessions and formal interviews with faculty. They then make formal offers based on this weekend. This is opposed to the more standard practice of making offers and then flying you out to convince you to attend. 2. That if your not invited to the weekend at this stage you are effectively rejected. Although perhaps this is not the case as it is still early in the season. Are either/both/none of the above correct?
catchermiscount Posted January 20, 2012 Posted January 20, 2012 I believe a small group of applicants is accepted without interview; they have their own pure recruitment weekend separately from the interview weekend. Others interview. I believe the worst-case scenario from the interview is getting waitlisted. Not sure if failing to get an interview implies a pocket rejection, but that seems like a reasonably sensible conclusion.
justanotherperson Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 (edited) Does anyone know what kind of questions they ask if they do interview you? I'd imagine professors would be talking to you but would they also consider your subfield (for instance, an IR professor interviewing an IR applicant)? Seems like Emory is ignoring me as an applicant, but I'd still like to know how they conduct interviews. Good luck to everyone! Edited January 24, 2012 by justanotherperson
catchermiscount Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 I got a few "why Emory?"-type questions, and also a few substantive questions. In my statement, I had indicated that I was interested in developing a continuous measure of rivalry, so the folks conducting the interview (three IR faculty) asked a few literature-ish questions and a few methods-ish questions.
