newsociologist Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 (edited) Just checked my email and just got my acceptance and support for the full 5. Congrats to everyone!! Woohoo! Edited February 4, 2012 by newsociologist
hobokennojokin Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 Congrats! What other places are you waiting on and what are your interests? I applied to a litany of other schools but after considering "unofficial rejections" (not included in original batch of acceptances) and those no longer in the running, I'd say I'm still waiting to hear from Penn, Princeton, Chicago, Harvard, and Northwestern. My interests lay broadly at the moment within stratification, soc of ed, and urban. How about yourself?

I am waiting to hear from NYU, Johns Hopkins, UCSB, UCI and Arizona before I even start thinking about where I want to go. I also applied to Wisconsin but I haven't heard anything yet so I assume that it's not good news. My broad areas of interest are political economy, development, state theory and social movements.
allhandsonthebadone Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 I didn't get an email yet. Now I am really worried I bombed the interview horribly.
allhandsonthebadone Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 I did get my email. Waitlisted. I guess I'm the outlier. So depressed.
maximus82 Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 I did get my email. Waitlisted. I guess I'm the outlier. So depressed. I was waitlisted at Indiana 3 years ago. I know the feeling. If it makes you feel any better, Indiana is way more selective than most people realize... probably under 5% acceptance rate. so you should feel good about your chances in other places.
ThisSlumgullionIsSoVapid Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 I did get my email. Waitlisted. I guess I'm the outlier. So depressed. Why be depressed? You were wait listed at a top 10 university. This is quite the accomplishment on its own. Plus, it means you're competitive in the top-10 pool and therefore should give you some more confidence about the other programs you applied to. I would be ecstatic if I were even a contender for top 10's, let alone have an opportunity to get into one (as you most certainly have). Don't confuse wait list with rejection.
allhandsonthebadone Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 Thanks for the words of encouragement. Although I prepared my hardest for the interview, all this talk of this being a casual interview sure to be followed by an acceptance really got my hopes up. I was really looking forward to having the security of having one acceptance. The places I applied to is a virtual murderers row. To no longer have the security that I thought I had is just unsettling right now. I fear this may have been my best chance. Perhaps I need time for the shock to wear off.
sciencegirl Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 @badone.. I think the idea that there is a "safety" school is a bit of a misnomer... I think it has a lot more to do with match. Being interviewed at a top program means that you are super competitive. And you also applied to a ton of places.. was Indiana your top choice? If not, I think you should chin up a bit and keep thinking that a better school might let you in (without having to sweat an interview).
Chuck Posted February 5, 2012 Posted February 5, 2012 Congrats to everyone who received good news from Indiana! I hear great things about their program. Can we do a comparison of the funding offers between Wisconsin and Indiana? It would be good to put out in the open how two top public programs stack up. Wisconsin's is: Guaranteed 5 years of funding for all admitted students. TA's & RA's are paid $7000 - $7600 a semester. Tuition remission and health insurance is included, but the letter mentions nothing about summer funding. I have been in contact with a current student at Wisconsin who says there is an additional $500/semester in student activity fees charged by the university which all students have to pay. This fee was also conveniently omitted from the admit letter. The paucity of resources at Wisconsin, especially compared to the private schools, is starting to freak me out.

On my list or really anybody's list there isn't such a thing. Security came more from the concept of feeling like you had at least one admittance in the bag. Now I feel I am in the ether of not knowing if I will get in anywhere. Anyway, although Indiana was a good fit I think there are six schools on my list that fit better. I'll try to stay optimistic.
