  1. ( @Palito: Hope you don't mind that I'm essentially rehashing what you've written above ) Echoing above sentiments, congrats to all those that have received encouraging news about their graduate school futures. I'm a current student at Indiana University and would be happy to chat with those who have questions about the program. Feel free to PM. Cheers!
  2. So did she pull through?! hahah
  3. Whoops, sorry completely misread. Also realizing you said references. They seem to be more flexible with those.
  4. Hate to be the second bearer of bad news on this thread but I do think it is likely that your application will be DQ'd. Formatting is one of the first criteria used to weed out applications, especially when you have thousands. Also, the extra space (as little or non-significant as it may be) constitutes an unfair advantage. You can hope it won't be noticed but my guess would be that after seeing hundreds of applications formatted in 1' margins, 0.7' margins might be easier to spot than one might think.
  5. Hang on dear waitlisters. If my experience is anything UMN's waitlist is a bit all over the place. Last year it seemed they had me on an unofficial waitlist, as I didn't hear anything well into March. I was then sent an "official" rejection via email first week of April. But wouldn't you know, a week before the april 15th deadline I was sent another email saying that, in fact, I was now being offered admission. So it goes sometimes.
  6. What exactly does the "HM upgrade" process look like? You just get an email saying you've been upgraded? What an amazing feeling that must be..
  7. Check spam folders. That's where I found mine
  8. Honorable mention. Shoul I i be happy or sad about this? Torn up about it but I do have a year of eligibility left.
  9. I think I can make it to Tuesday. But until next Friday seems like an eternity.
  10. Right there with you Trantorian. On that note--Ladies and Gentleman, your 2013 NSF GRFP applicants!!
  11. Just so I can prod even further, does anyone know around when the site goes down on the night the awards are announced? Is it exactly 11p EST? Or sometime earlier in the evening?
  12. How convinced are we about this Tuesday/Friday announcement date? ARE WE SURE!? HOW SURE DAMMIT!!!!!!! hahahahah
  13. Starting to get to that point of checking this thread way more than anyone should be...
  14. Anybody know when the ASA honors program decisions come out? Or around when they have usually come out in the past? Thanks!
  15. Hi all, I know this is an important and nerve wracking time for you all. I'm a current first year graduate student in the department of sociology here at IU and would be happy to chat with any of you interested in learning more about the program. Feel free to PM me and we can exchange emails. Best of luck till April! -socpsych
  16. elw4y8-- you took the words right out of my mouth. I guess we must have missed each other on Duke's visit days. I'm also leaning towards accepting the offer from Indiana over Duke. And yes, the funding package at Duke is extremely competitive. It was also more a matter of fit for me as well. Also for some of my particular interests--education/race&ethnicity-- the faculty situation is a bit fluid at the moment. But def. a great program!
  17. Likely to turn down my acceptance sometime later this week. Best of luck to those on the waitlist!
  18. Can someone get FertMigMort in here?
  19. Hahaha i want to make it clear that I am currently UNDER the assumption that this would be indeed be madness. That said sometimes I wonder if this subconsciously favorably colors school x. Anyway, thanks for the insight all. I feel like one way or the other, a gut feeling will emerge towards April
  20. Honestly it never hurts to be too careful. Academia is WAY smaller than I originally thought. Also I think a lot of people don't name schools to be "secretive", but rather to not come off as snobby. Whether announcing schools is or is not, I guess that's up to each individual person.
  21. Stayed away from this thread for a while but I'd be interested to hear some thoughts from fellow cafers. Here's the situation: I have had the good fortune of getting into two schools comfortably within the top 15. As of now, it's looking like my choices will come down to these two, as well as a final school I applied to in my current city, which we will call "school x" Where the RELATIONSHIP aspect of all this comes in is that I had been single during the whole application process, and wasn't really looking to get hitched what with graduate school coming up and all. That said, over the last several months I've been seeing a great girl, and it seems like it's just starting to grow into something worthwhile. It also just so happens that I just had my visit day with school x, and although not ranked in the top 25, is a very strong program with a good reputation that figures to be on the up and up. Also, of the three schools, school x by far has the best fit, and I really enjoyed meeting with the faculty. I can see myself thriving here. My question: would I be CRAZY to turn down the top 15 programs for school x? Also, should this potential relationship have ANY type of influence on my final decision? I feel like I'd be crazy to let it impact my ultimate choice even in the slightest. But eh, just thought I'd ask. What do you all think? Feel free to let me know if any other information might be helpful
