antecedent Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Did anyone else just get an email titled: UW-Madison Graduate English Program Application I almost had a heart attack! They've done this to me like three times in the past two weeks too. It's even worse though cause the first two lines of the email read like this: "Again, thank you for your application to the graduate programs in English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. We received a great number of applications to our various areas of study..." It turns out that, in typical UW-Madison style, they were just trying to be nice and helpful to prevent us grad hopefuls from fretting too much. All decisions should be out by February 21st, they said, or we should contact Robyn Shanahan directly. Instead they just nearly gave me a heart attack. Anyone else?
admirari Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 I also gasped when I got this email earlier today. I haven't heard from any of the schools yet, so I was devastated when I read the beginning part of this email. Madison is one of my first choices, and I AM really desperate. But I wonder, how come you get three of these emails from Madison since this is my first? Does this mean I'm losing hope?
user_name Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 yeah i got this. maybe they send it out when they narrow it down?
Germaine123 Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Hm. I didn't receive any of those emails. Just the slew of emails that tell you where you to check your status etc. mid-December. Looking back though, I did get the email that you received back in 2010, mid-December, the first time I applied. I don't see a method to their (very courteous) madness.
antecedent Posted February 3, 2012 Author Posted February 3, 2012 I only received one of those emails, but I've been receiving random emails about not-yet-relevant university-wide financial aid business since I submitted my FAFSA in early January. They just always have tantalizing titles like "University of Wisconsin - Madison Financial Aid" and then the body says something like "Don't forget to fill out your FAFSA!" or "FYI - need-based student loans have changed thanks to congress not giving a shit about grad students" or whatever. I don't know if there's any rhyme or reason to their seemingly random courtesy emails. Lets just pretend that if we're still getting them it must mean good news, right?
claptrap Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 (edited) I just received an e-mail from the DGS letting me know that my formal acceptance would be coming in the mail soon! Excited! Hope you all hear good news soon! Edit: Posted on the results page as MA, but to clarify, it should be MA to PhD in Literary Studies. Edited February 9, 2012 by OverTheMoon Timshel and marlowe 2
antecedent Posted February 9, 2012 Author Posted February 9, 2012 Congrats OverTheMoon! How exciting I hope we all hear back soon! Thanks for posting here.
marlowe Posted February 9, 2012 Posted February 9, 2012 I received the email as well! I am very, very excited. It was my second round. Antecedent, if the PhDs don't work out this time around and you can find a way to pay for it, I would definitely recommend doing your MA abroad. I did, and it was an absolutely wonderful experience.
antecedent Posted February 9, 2012 Author Posted February 9, 2012 Antecedent, if the PhDs don't work out this time around and you can find a way to pay for it, I would definitely recommend doing your MA abroad. I did, and it was an absolutely wonderful experience. I applied for the MA in Applied Linguistics in the UW-Madison English department. I don't think it's a given straight through to the PhD the way the Lit MA is, though I did express my interest in pursuing a doctorate. I have been accepted to a program in the UK, it's just so freaking expensive. How did you cover the cost of studying abroad? Where did you do your MA, if you don't mind me asking? I definitely want to complete an MA before I get to my PhD - UT Austin is the only PhD program I applied to that didn't have a semi-autonomous Masters. BTW, Congrats Marlowe!
antecedent Posted February 10, 2012 Author Posted February 10, 2012 Thanks Marlowe I appreciate any and all words of wisdom, and/or reality checks. marlowe 1
attnescapists Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 anybody get a rejection email? my status still says pending on the site
user_name Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 still pending. three people got accepted. last year i think it was six. maybe still a chance?
antecedent Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 Has anyone heard about an MA yet? So far I've only seen PhDs on the board.
user_name Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 there's one master's on the board, but don't they have only a PhD where they give you a masters on the way if you don't already have one?
Rupert Pupkin Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Yea, I've already written this one down as a rejection.
antecedent Posted February 13, 2012 Author Posted February 13, 2012 I applied to the Applied Linguistics MA that is offered by the English department, and you're required to have that specific MA or it's equivalent before you can apply for the PhD. It's in the English department though, so I figured I might not be the only one here who applied. I suppose I should go interrogate the Linguistics thread now...
user_name Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 claiming one of those directions that just went up. goodbye top choice.
antecedent Posted February 16, 2012 Author Posted February 16, 2012 My status on the website has changed to say I was "recommended for admission" for the Applied English Linguistics MA. Does that mean I'm in? Almost in? Gaaah I can't handle this!
rawera Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Do you have to have a myWisc thing (or whatever) in order to check your status?
user_name Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 that means the department wants you and they just have to get the grad school to ok it. basically you're in--congrats!
ComeBackZinc Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 My status on the website has changed to say I was "recommended for admission" for the Applied English Linguistics MA. Does that mean I'm in? Almost in? Gaaah I can't handle this! It very likely means you're in. In many places, the department technically recommends people for admission, while the graduate school technically extends the offer of admission, even though in practice the department chooses. I'll risk saying congrats!
spasticlitotes Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Congrats to all who got in! If you haven't heard, you may want to check your status - I have been denied.
antecedent Posted February 28, 2012 Author Posted February 28, 2012 Hey UW-Madisson acceptees, I have a question about funding. If you got in with funding, does it start in your first year? Also, do your teaching responsibilities start in your second year or later? Feel free to PM me if you don't want to post it here. I'm starting to gather data to attempt to bargain for even a little help from financial aid/the department, and knowledge is power right? Thanks and congrats again to all that got in
