Rhet/Comp and Waiting

Recommended Posts

I'm the one who heard from Purdue. I received an email from the acting DGS to tell me I was nominated for a fellowship, so based on that (and my Purdue alum faculty member's interpretation of the email) I ASSUME I am accepted. The DGS said they are still waiting on their funding to be finalized before they can make any official offers, they should know by late February, perhaps sooner. Hope that helps!

And of course, as soon as I post that, I received an email from the DGS (turns out previous emails had been from the acting director of rhet/comp) offering me an official position and the Ross fellowship. Details to follow next week on funding.

Just saw an Alabama acceptance--it seems like all the programs I am waiting on are starting to notify, and yet I've heard nothing. I have a feeling this might be an across the board rejection season for me.

But then again, all it takes is one and I'm hoping something still comes through. I've got time. Though that sentiment should be uplifting in its possibilities, I'm getting scared.

Oh and (duh), congrats to the Alabama acceptance recipient!

mrock, my wife was accepted a few weeks ago and has been in close contact with faculty member. as i understand it, offers are out. you should be able to see if you're waitlisted on the website. login to my.wisc. then navigate to the page where you can see all the materials you submitted (they should have check marks next to them). there will be a "Note:" there stating that you've been waitlisted and on what date it your waitlist status was processed.

I have been stressing all day today not knowing whether all of the accepts for Austin are out or just those for lit. Anyone else being driven insane by the possibility of different notification schedules for rhetoric?

Edit: Guess they announced that all first round admissions offers were made. So, nevermind. Sigh.

I'm wondering how the rhet/comp crowd is doing? Everybody hanging in there?

I also want to know if anybody has had any news from Penn State? I've heard from almost everyone else and am holding out on making some travel arrangements for a visitation weekend at a different school in case Penn State accepts me.

About to pull my hair out. My one acceptance wants a decision by March 1 and I haven't heard from any of my other schools.

I don't think Penn State has really started notifying yet (except possibly a few fellowship nominees).

Congrats on the acceptance, impending. I wish it didn't come along with the stress of an early decision deadline. I think it's entirely unfair to pressure us to make decisions that quickly (especially when it seems like so many rhet/comp programs move slowly). URfreakingI sent an email out this week saying that they won't even have decisions made until April 1st... a whole month after your school wants to know if you're coming or not. Crazy.

I didn't apply to any of the schools Amiee mentioned and only share Penn State with impending, so I can't really help you guys gauge what your programs are doing. Here's to hoping they're taking extra time to decide how many millions of dollars to give each of us...

I think Penn State is in the thick of it right now. A member of the graduate faculty called my WPA yesterday asking questions about my application. I was sitting in the room with her when the phone rang! This is to say, no decisions yet but should be coming soon. I was bummed not to hear something today, but I imagine offers might be out by next week. I also spoke with a grad student in the program a few weeks ago (2 maybe?) whose friend is on the selection committee and the comm. wanted to extend offers within 3 weeks. Campus visit is at end of March, I think.

Email from Penn State DGS this morning. Interested in my app and want to make me an offer, but need a TA line to open up. According to him, they let very few applicants in who already have MAs. Though never used the term, I'm pretty sure I've been . . . dah, duh, dahhhhh . . . waitlisted . . .

They said, "Because of the nature of our program, we have very few lines open for applicants with MAs in hand." I get the sense that my status is less like a member of a "wait list" and more like an "alternate." 2nd string starter? :)

I emailed them last week to see if they could provide any info on my application status because I'm dealing with a March 1 deadline from another school and am trying to get any info I possibly can. And the email I got back sounds similar to yours--it seems like they're really constricted by funding. Mine said something like, we're very interested, and we hope a TA line will open up, but we're not totally sure. I don't know if this means they're waiting on people to accept or decline early offers (I know there was one posted here back in late January, but I wonder how many they have out...) or if they're hoping they'll get more funding approved. Either way, I think you're right that it's more like we're on the second string than the waitlist.

Congrats! I hope funding comes through for both of us!

ASU has a great program, and I don't mean to tell them their business, but March 1st seems really early to ask for a decision.

Yeah, I have a meeting with the director of the PhD program in an hour to see if I can get an extension. I'm already here and known in the department, soooo I hope I have some bargaining power. I feel totally trapped trying to decide by Thursday without any official decisions from my other schools.

Good luck! I was uncomfortable with a March 19 deadline, but March 1 is ridiculous I hope you can work something out with them.
