A few days ago, one of my old professors who wrote a recommendation got a "contact" asking my math/quant background in coursework and experience. He asked me it and I told him. He wouldnt tell me any more details, I assume it could only conceivably be one of my schools.

But its so weird, why would they ask him, he taught international relations to me and is just a professor, why would they even ask, they have my transcript and SOP...the whole thing is strange, its really bothering me.

Oh I'm applying as an international student, maybe it makes a difference.

I'm not an international student, but one of my recommenders was contacted the day after an interview at one of my top choices. From the sound of it, they just wanted to get more information from the recommender about the research I had done at my university. I was recommended for admission soon after that. Now I just have to wait for the director to approve my recommendation... *Crosses fingers* Anyway, my point is not to worry, and that if it's anything like the experience I had, the contact was probably made because they are strongly considering your application and just would like to get more information before they make the recommendation.

if you're saying that they just re-asked the same info from your transcript, maybe they were concerned about a forgery? maybe not because of you specifically but because of past candidates?

My POI at one school I've applied to contacted one of my recommenders. She is not on the adcomm so only saw my statement & wanted a fuller picture. Now my POI is trying to get me funded. (fingers crossed) Could be one of many potential scenarios... it's all shrouded in such mystery.

My POI contacted a professor I only mentioned my SOP for an extra recommendation. Soon I got admited with a generous fellowship.

If they are interested in you and try to gather information about you, they are seriously considering you- that is a very very good sign.
