  1. To be fair, I DID choose the program that I did because of the impressive placement rate of their graduates in both academia and industry, the emphasis they place on finishing students within 5 years, and the overall generous funding package in addition making every attempt to provide students with summer funding... I don't think every "fully funded" program necessarily has those characteristics and they're good things to consider...
  2. I had a Skype "interview" with McGill last year and they just wanted to make sure I had taken a syntax course. Otherwise I think my interviewer just told me about some of their research and I probably asked a few questions. I still over-prepared for it, so feel free to do that anyway.
  3. Mine was two pages single-spaced which seemed to be fine. I probably wouldn't write more than that.
  4. North Carolina State University has a two-year MA in sociolinguistics (with some fabulous sociolinguists) and offers paid TAships.
  5. Yeah! I hope to. It's still a ways away yet... (or it feels like it).
  6. Going to UCLA. Glad to be done with this process!
  7. From what I gathered while considering McGill, their linguistics department seems to have a close relationship with the Centre for Research on Brain, Language, and Music in Montreal (http://www.crblm.ca/).
  8. UChicago's open house is this week... after which I'll finally be able to make a decision. Somehow.
  9. I saw someone posting on the results board about Stanford: all offers went out today or earlier to people who were invited to the open house for interviews last week.
  10. Just declined an offer and it feels terrible! Even though I really didn't think it was a wonderful fit. At least I'm one step closer towards making a final decision... two more visits to go.
  11. Same exact thing happened to me two years ago! Dis!
  12. Congrats! One full glass, one empty glass. That's how it goes, right? I'm on my way to my first campus visit tomorrow. Nervous, but definitely excited.
  13. There's an open house for UChicago the first week of April for admitted students.
  14. Yeah, my two pending applications have sent out at least one or more acceptances according to GC results, but I've heard nothing. It's tense! Good luck!
  15. Hi whatever_, You can check your application status for UChicago by logging back into the application, opening it up, and if there's anything new you'll see it under "status update." I have a link to an official acceptance letter + funding offer there which I was notified of via email about a week after the unofficial acceptance from the department. That's all I know--don't know anything about other decisions they've made.
  16. Thanks, linguo! I'm really looking forward to my visit ... soon! It would certainly be amazing to be a part of that growth at McGill.
  17. Can you visit SB before or after an open house/visit at Cornell? I wouldn't go just to meet your POI there if you're 100% set on the other school. I'm sure she'd be glad to meet you another time! Either way, you have time to consider your options.
  18. Congrats longforit! That's really exciting. Sounds like you will get a chance to be involved in collaborations between departments/faculty. Yay.
  19. FYI for anyone going to the Stanford interviews/open house--18 people are on the shortlist and (from rejections posted here) it looks like 7 people plus a "buffer" (I assume) will be admitted.
  20. I haven't done it myself (except for one small homework assignment once), but I have seen it take a lot of effort by those in my dept who do synthesize speech. But they were manipulating naturally elicited speech versus lab/read speech. Not sure if that makes a big difference. I would guess vowels are harder than consonants (??), but you still need to deal with formant transitions regardless. Maybe look around for an useful interface to the Klatt synthesizer that might make the process and parameters simpler to control. For example, Klattworks or I also see one for Python. I guess the thing to do would be to try it and see how long it takes you...
  21. Yep! Been watching Twin Peaks (& MST3K) pretty obsessively lately.
  22. ... when you, a linguist!, have a typo in the first sentence of 3/7 SOPs (and no acceptances from those programs so far...) But! It's a missing function word at a line break, so pretty understandable. And there's a reasonable chance that those reading it didn't notice... Meh.
  23. Wwwooowww. I'm going to email them rejecting them. Even though I never applied. They seem like they'd take it in stride.
