@ThisSlum - Gracias! Politics/Policy/Culture as it relates to the Latin@ community, but mostly Politics & Policy. I'm really excited - good times keep on coming! Hopefully I'll find time to put a piece together over the weekend, then I have to kick it to my editor... but I think the turn around is pretty quick... will post upon publishing something.

I have the same decision to make - I told my boss that I was admitted and that I'd be leaving in the summer, but that could mean any time June - Aug. I'm already going to start training my replacement this spring. So, I also crave the adventure! Cross-country train trip? Yes. Road trip on the California coast? Yes. Europe? Yes. Have the money to do anything? Not reallyyyy.

You're seriously reading my mind right now. I feel like I'll be old by the time I have the $$ to afford to fulfill my terrible wanderlust.

I have long given up on doing anything remotely close to it.

Well, actually...this summer I might have enough for a really nice trip as I'm basically enslaving myself to work right now. However, I'm just concerned that I'll spend too much...and all this work for grad school will go to waste. bah.

Ha, giacomo... You can pay the oversize luggage fee and we'll be even. Seriously though, Europe is on the bucket list (if my bank account will be so kind).

I plan on doing all those neat, quirky local things that I always wanted to do but never seemed to get around to. That odd looking bar on the edge of town, local museums, hiking trails, try restaurants I haven't been to, and use my grill so often it breaks!

This all sounds so good it makes me want to quit my job RIGHT NOW!

Right? Guys, how am I supposed to focus with all this vacation talk? Back to my spreadsheet calculating how much money I need to save up before I can actually quit my job :-P

I think this sounds like a really great plan. I had wanted to travel a bit, but I've been working so hard doing the job + grad school application thing that I haven't had the opportunity to really take advantage of all the my city has to offer. Seeing as I'll be moving away from friends and family for the next 5-7 years, I think maybe it will be nice to just spend time with people close to me. BBQs, 4th of july fireworks, museums, music festivals, all that jazz.

I'm just trying to chill the heck out. I want to take up some sort of nature/fitness challenge like hiking a long trail I haven't done yet, running a half-marathon, etc.

I'll also probably waitress or something to make a bit of money before the fall.

I just want to get to grad school healthy, rested, confident, and with money in my pocket. I feel like those are the basic things I need to be happy grad student and excel.

Have you decided where you're going?

I'm notoriously indecisive. I can't pick a restaurant, never mind a grad school. But it's pretty much between two programs, one of which has me on the wait-list (and is a far, far-shot). But this board will be first to hear! :D

In a somewhat awkward moment with a potential future advisor at one of my top choices, I asked what I could be doing between now and September to prepare for grad school. The professor responded, "Read things that are as far away from sociology as you can get." Great advice, but I'm way too neurotic to do that. I feel incredibly under-prepared, and will be trying to teach myself to use network analysis software over the summer (yes, I realize this is impossible, but I HAVE TO TRY  )

Ha, yeah I guess that was an ambiguous set-up to my story... hmmmm maybe the awkwardness is my fault.

Advice I was given regarding my gap between UG and G: "ENJOY BEING YOUNG AND IN A CITY. GO OUT WHENEVER YOU CAN."

This is was completely out of left-field from a prof I always considered very very straightlaced. Ha

I would add -- if you're in a long term relationship or marriage, spend the summer catering to your partner,  because you are about to become a negligent boyfriend/girlfriend for a couple years.
