troutbum Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 I saw an acceptance from Oregon State; Congrats to the poster!! Did they alert you as to the timeline for GTA positions? Were you provided with any other information? I'd love to hear anything you may know regarding the acceptance/funding timeline, as I am anxiously awaiting their response.
Julianne Pigoon Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 (edited) HI this is my BFF. I will alert her that you have questions. Edited February 11, 2012 by Julianne Pigoon
skybythelight Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 Hi! I have been alerted. I got a phone call from the graduate coordinator yesterday around 5:30 (EST). He just told me that I had been accepted and been awarded the scholarship and asked if I had any questions--which, of course, I do now but at the time I was in stunned silence as this was the first school I'd heard back from. Anyway, we chatted about potentially visiting the school and then he told me that I was third on the waiting list for a GTA position, which is, in his words "historically a very strong position though by no means guaranteed." He said that they should know definitively on that in four or five weeks. He also sent an e-mail just reiterating everything he told me on the phone with contact information for when I do inevitably have questions. So that's pretty much all I know, that "four or five weeks" comment was the only suggestion I got of a timeline as far as the GTAs are concerned. Thank you for your congratulations! Are you waiting on admission news or funding?
troutbum Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 Awesome. Congrats again! I'm still waiting on admission news, and am suddenly quite anxious now that I know responses have begun. I already have one admit elsewhere, so waiting is at least bearable at this point, but I'm rather fond of Oregon State's program and faculty, so I'm hoping for good news! Were you admitted to the literature and culture track, or to the rhetoric, writing, and culture? What is your area of emphasis or research? I'm after the literature and culture option, and my expressed interest is in Postcolonial literature with an emphasis in Caribbean/Latin American literature and travel narratives.
skybythelight Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Literature and culture for me as well, though I didn't give such a specific area of focus. I'm also interested in the post-colonial literary and theoretical tradition, as well as gender and queer studies.
troutbum Posted February 28, 2012 Author Posted February 28, 2012 I just thought I'd check back in and see if you ever got funding? I happen to be wait-listed, and received an update email recently, which made me think of your wait-list position in regards to a GTA.
troutbum Posted March 21, 2012 Author Posted March 21, 2012 I finally got in! How is your decision process going? Did they ever update you on the GTA? I'm going to be talking to the program director about funding possibilities early next week, but I was wondering if you looked into TA possibilities in other departments or the like as you've been waiting?
skybythelight Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 Congratulations! I haven't heard anything about the GTA, no. I'm fairly certain (okay, absolutely certain) I'm not going to be attending, anyway.
