maxmission Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Hi, I got a totally unexpected call from a professor from a top 10 school. I was in the middle of some simulations, and I could not concentrate on the gravity of the conversation. The professor basically said I have to be 100% committed to join her group, then she will ask the department to send me an acceptance letter. I said I am 100% sure and that she was the first professor to call me and that I have applied to some other universities too (she knew already, had to put that in the application form). However, I think my tone was not 100% sure - as I said I just got an unexpected call. She said - no problem, go to my research page, search on the internet and email me. The conversation was just 3 min 50secs long and most of the time she talked about her group (no research talk). She said she was impressed by my qualifications and my application and her needs students like me. I emailed her 15 minutes later, and reiterated my commitment. This happened 1 day ago. However, she has not replied yet and I have not heard from the department also. You have figured by now that I am getting a little paranoid. Does this happen often? Does this mean the professor was just checking if I was ready to join or not before she makes her offer, i.e, am I basically in? Should I email her again? After that I checked her profile and found out she was the world leading authority in that field.......don't even talk about it, she is great!
CarlieE Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Congratulations!!! That sounds like GREAT news! Maybe she is waiting to email you once she has 100% approval from her dept chair or the adcomm or graduate office (about funding) or something like that.
maxmission Posted February 21, 2012 Author Posted February 21, 2012 Yes. Maybe I should be patient, but now I cannot concentrate on anything! I think she has a lot of research funding and it's a private university, so I think funding should not be a problem.
maxmission Posted February 22, 2012 Author Posted February 22, 2012 People, I have not heard from her since. Is it a good idea to contact her students to find out how she selects her students?
modernity Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 I got a call from a professor during the decision process. She also wanted to make sure before the acceptance came through that I was 100% about the school, their program, understood what was going to be expected of me. It still took a few days however for her decision to go through the department and be processed. You need to just take some deep breaths. Its only been two days. I wouldn't start worrying until it was at least a week.
CarlieE Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 Yes I agree; she might have gotten busy, or fallen sick (it is winter after all), or something completely unrelated to the admissions process. I would say that if you don't hear from her by Friday, then perhaps a follow up email over the weekend will be OK. Most graduate admin committees are meeting this week and so decisions probably won't be available until next week anyway...
maxmission Posted February 24, 2012 Author Posted February 24, 2012 Thanks you guys. I couldn't take it anymore and mailed her on Wednesday, but not I have not heard from her yet. I hope this does not hinder my chances. I will be patient
maxmission Posted February 27, 2012 Author Posted February 27, 2012 Guys, I got it!! Today I received an email saying I have been accepted into the department and my offer letter has been mailed to me. I have been assigned an advisor, the same professor who called me. Btw I am an international student and my field is EE.
