I've got a job kayaking around saltmarshes working on birds for US Fish and Wildlife. A little nervous about the dates - unless I get into the school that's on quarters, I'll have a week or two at most to drive home from the job (14hrs), pack, and move to the grad school (anywhere from 8-32 hrs away)!

But it's a nice diversion - no pressure data collection, fun stuff that I mostly know how to do but will keep my skill set fresh for my own research.

Yeah, if I do end up working over the Summer, it would be nice if I could do something related to my field and/or POI.

What I want to do over the summer:

  1. Read up on anthro theory.. "yes, Evan' Pritchard, tell me more about the Nuer"
  2. Rewrite a paper in an attempt to publish it
  3. Move to a new city where I'll begin my PhD program
  4. Did I mention lots of academic reading?

What I will probably end up doing:

  1. Move to said city (my lease is up in July so I will either be homeless or will move to said city.)
  2. Lie in the sun and stare up at the clouds, looking for bunnies or crap
  3. Sleep
  4. Read the rest of the Song of Ice and Fire series...
  5. Over indulge in Star Trek TNG and BSG on Netflix...
  6. Rewrite 2 or 3 paragraphs of abovesaid paper
  7. Finish half of the Nuer
  8. Read 1/4 of the academic reading list I planned...
  9. Did I mention sleep?

This happens every winter break. I'm resigned to accepting my failure to complete the reading list as planned. :)

Summer is looking good for me because there is nothing on my agenda. Quit my job in June. Get to live on Oahu for 6 weeks and be a total beach bum while my husband slaves away at his hospital rotation. B)

Move out of the place I live now so I don't have to pay rent.

Backpack and/or climb around Montana, Idaho and maybe other western states. Possibly WWOOF if I run out of money for food.

If I can find any way, go back to Japan to study some more. Or simply, stay here and study. (Japan is more fun tho :D )

It would be quite nice to relocate a month before my program starts. Hopefully I'll still have enough savings left to do that.

I have to relocate in July - the lease is up - but my stipend won't start until September so the boyf and I are trying to save up enough to move and live (in a new place where we won't know the good deals).. If it's any consolation I am cashing in (one of) my (now defunct basically) 401Ks to do it...

That sounds like fun, too bad about the possible time conflict. :( I hope it works out for you!

I applied for a few summer-long positions in case I would not be attending a grad program in the fall, but now that I know I will be moving about 15 hrs away I'd like to not rush myself with the preparations (especially when I need to do a major cleaning-out of my room at home before I go)!

So I'm hoping to return to my previous field assistantship in April (it's a seasonal position that only runs for a couple months in fall and spring).

I will have fellowship funding for the summer, so I'd like to visit my new advisor's field sites when the assistantship is over.

I am planning on having at least 4 weeks to prepare (not counting now until April), since I will probably be moving in early August.

I've got a list of wonderful things liek go to the beach, visit family for a week or two, have guests, etc. We also have plans to go to Hawaii at the beginning of summer.

But my big project is going to be consulting with a librarian at the school I will attend, deciding on a citation management software, and inputting all of my articles from my MA thesis and my (relevant) MA course readings! I want to start a big helpful database of all my research and course readings. Woo hoo ;)

We packed up and did the corss-country move last summer, so I don't have anywhere to move! :) Btw, good luck for those of you that do!

Sounds like you've got a good plan. As far as citations go, you might look into Zotero. It's an add on (or plug in, or some shit) for firefox (and maybe other browsers?) and it keeps your stuff online. We've been using it to go through our department library to catalogue and re-organize. And it has plug ins (or whatever) for word processors.

I've got to do that for my personal library ...

WHAT!?

Then it's almost like they thought "hm.. how to raise some extra money, how to raise some extra money.. oh let's just say no, no spots available this year and keep it all!"

Insanity.
