HunkyDory
For the Writing Workshop? Are you guys fiction or poetry? I always hear more people being vocal about how much they hated the Iowa Writers Workshop. The only people I ever hear singing its praises are the ones that want to be admitted. EDIT: And I asked genre because I'm always talking to poets, never fiction writers. Edited February 28, 2012 by dokkeynot
homeric_voice
Nothing in the mail yesterday or today, but I am a few states away. According to last year's posts, there wasn't a ton of contact from the department, so a snail mail notification from the university itself wouldn't shock me. transcendental
So was the acceptance post a fake? I doubt the acceptances were fake, but the acceptees may not want to call attention to themselves. I'm only a state away from Iowa, so, yeah, I at least hope acceptances and rejections go out at around the same time. For the Writing Workshop? Are you guys fiction or poetry? I always hear more people being vocal about how much they hated the Iowa Writers Workshop. The only people I ever hear singing its praises are the ones that want to be admitted. portlandfioretti
I applied to the English PhD. I was wondering if it was fake just because there was only one post up there all day, but now that there are two I guess it must be real.
Swagato
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone here has applied to Iowa's Comp Lit program and has any news to offer about it. I'm an applicant to the Film Studies program, which is housed within the same department (CCL), and have not heard anything at all. It is quite late, judging by prior years, so any information would be hugely helpful.
walt whitman
Still waiting on Iowa... Anybody hear anything?
homeric_voice
Still nothing. It's possible those two acceptances belonged to a very limited first wave of admits. I get the feeling that if they were done with their acceptances, we'd be seeing some wait-listers by now. My optimism amazes me.
Swagato
Hi, I just wanted to return to this thread with an update. This may or may not apply to English. I spoke with Jenny Ritchie in the Dept. of Cinema and Comp. Lit. She indicated that they were late this year, and that deliberations are still ongoing. News ought to trickle out within a week or two. Hope this helps!
transcendental
Saw a couple of rejections and acceptances go up for Iowa. Anyone here want to claim the accepts and maybe provide details, like if the early posts were special fellowships or something? (Congrats, btw). I had already counted them out... pirrip48
I was one of the recent admits, so I can't comment on whether or not the earlier ones were fellowship offers, or whether Iowa is simply staggering their admits (past evidence from gradcafe does seem to indicate that the offers have been a bit sporadic). My letter came from the director of graduate finances, and I was curious to see the details that others had received, and if anyone would be visiting (not a viable option for me given timing and distance at this point). Best of luck to everyone.

transcendental
Congrats, pirrip! May I ask what your subfield is? I just got a letter saying I was wait-listed! Pretty excited because I really thought I was out of the running. I've got options but my mind would be blown if I ended up getting in.
pirrip48
Thanks, transcendental, and congrats on your wait-list. It seems like there's been quite a bit of movement, recently, so here's to hoping that it turns into an acceptance. I'm in 19th century British--you? The person I've been in contact there with seems hopeful, but I have no idea what will happen. I'm early/19th C American.
