CarolineSC Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Hey guys - I've seen a couple of postings of acceptances to this program. I've been accepted and it's at the top of my list as of right now. Is anyone leaning toward this school or definitely decided on going to this school? Also - anyone heard anything about KU's reputation? My current professors rave about it, but I want to hear what others have heard. and finally - for those who will be moving to Lawrence, what are you planning to do for housing? Anyone looking for a roommate?
Venti White Choc. Mocha Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 Howdy Caroline, I’m heading to KU for my PhD in lit. I’ve got a GTA so I’ve got to be down there by August 5th or something… KU and UCR were both my top-choice schools so I think the program is awesome. It’s ranked high for funding, but middling overall. I’m currently looking for a cheap foreclosure in Lawrence. It’s not going well. I’m probably going to have to rent for the first year. I need a backyard for my dog. Are you planning to go?
cunninghamww Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 Hello people, I was accepted into the PhD Lit program (GTA assistantship) as well and am 99% there. As far as reputation, I have heard "they have a lot of street cred" from several of my profs at Alabama (about to finish my Masters). Maryemma Graham and Doreen Fowler are pretty big deals as far as the Lit department is concerned. Very excited about the move...hear great things about Lawrence. I am married and my wife and I will be looking for a house. We are probably going to move up there in June and live in an Extended Stay type place until we find a place to buy. We are having our first child in September, so we are going to have to find one quick! Caroline...where did you go to school in SC? I graduated from Wofford for my undergrad and my wife is from Greenville.
Venti White Choc. Mocha Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 Hey Cunningham, awesome. We’ll be working together. Do you like poker or darts? I’d like a colleague that also likes darts. What is your specific area of interest? (Me-Female authors from mid 18th to late 19th Centuries, dark folklore, Victorians)

Darts and whiskey sounds dangerous, so I try to avoid. But I could be taught darts sans adult beverages.19th and 20th African American and Southern Lit...dabble in black feminist theory, generally american modernism, I guess. What part of NC are you from? Love the western part of the state.
Venti White Choc. Mocha Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 I've lived in Charlotte most of my life. I did my undergrad in Wilmington. So middle and east of the state. I'm trying to go visit before the fall--hopefully in the next few months.
cunninghamww Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Cunningham, I have friends to went to Wofford. Who were your friends? I probably know them: Wofford is *small*
CarolineSC Posted March 4, 2012 Author Posted March 4, 2012 Oh yay! I didn't see these replies until just now! @cunningham - I'm finishing up at the University of South Carolina right now. I've got a TA so I've got to be up there on the 5th too. I still have three schools to hear from, but I'm thinking I'll end up at KU.
CarolineSC Posted March 4, 2012 Author Posted March 4, 2012 Also - does anyone know why the MA/PhD degrees here take so awfully long? It's listed as 2 1/2-3 years for MA and 6 1/2 for PhD on average!
