TripWillis Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 (edited) So, is anyone on GC going? I'll come check out your panels. I'm getting there on Saturday and staying through Sunday. The train ticket and hotel were so fucking expensive. Vomit. At least my school is reimbursing me for most of it. Awkward, I suppose, but I'm still open to room sharing on Saturday. If someone is interested, PM me. Edited March 1, 2012 by TripWillis
desaparecido Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I'm presenting on Friday (panel 9.18, 4:45-6:15, if anyone's around), but which panel are you on? I'll try and swing by if I'm still in Rochester. And only since I've been following all the damn threads I can - any word on the Rutgers wait list for you?

Wish I could see your panel, but I'll be at the CUNY open house that day. You probably shouldn't bother checking out my panel -- I am just chairing, not presenting. No original work, just a topic I'm curious about. No news on Rutgers, except the DGS called me earlier this week and told me that I'm #1 in my subfield and very high on the absolute list. She spoke like she expected me to get in, but eh... you never know. Maybe she's just trying to keep me interested. So, I just need some 20th c americanists to bow out and hopefully that'll do it. Congrats on Stony Brook! Don't they take like 1 person a year or something? Crazy. I'd be super proud of that. Edited March 1, 2012 by TripWillis
desaparecido Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Ah, what panel is it, anyway? Not sure if I'm staying in Rochester overnight yet (definitely there Friday, most likely Thursday, up in the air thereafter), but who knows. I'll keep my fingers crossed that someone bows out of the Rutgers race for your sake! You're leaning there over CUNY if you have your druthers, right? &&thanks! They take four people now, from what I'm told (they used to take 6 people @ 15k each, then changed so they now take 4 @ 20k... it works out, I guess). I'm waiting to hear from another few schools (I applied to entirely too many programs, but I guess spreading the seeds wide and far is never a bad idea), but I'm leaning heavily towards SB as of now. Visiting day is next week, and I can't wait.

Visiting day is next week, and I can't wait. Being 1 of 4 would make me feel incredibly special. Yes, I would pick Rutgers over CUNY as of now, but I'm not 100% decided. I think CUNY is a slightly better fit at this stage, but Rutgers' support package is just much much much better. Toughie. Good luck with your remaining schools, and with those waitlist choices too -- more choices is never a bad thing, right? My panel is "Intellectual Spars and Rival Texts in 20th Century African American Literature" and it takes place in Highland Room B on Saturday, March 17th from 3:15-4:30.
desaparecido Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 1 of 4 makes me feel pretty good, but 1 of however many Columbia took wouldn't have sucked (still slightly bitter about that rejection). CUNY's funding package is, from all I've heard (from people on here and professors at Queens College, where I did my undergrad, who were studying at the GC), horrendous. I guess they can get away with it because of the awesome faculty there. Damn them. Either way, both Rutgers and CUNY are awesome programs - can't go wrong with any of the three, actually, since Amherst isn't anything to sneeze at. Hooray for choices!
desaparecido Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Also: that panel does sound interesting. If I'm still in town, I'll check it out.

My CUNY fellowship is doable, but considering it's only about $2000 more than what Amherst is offering for NYC cost of living (plus a 2/2 in years 2-4), it could be better. That said, I don't think it's bad per se, just not nearly as good as Rutgers.
Tybalt Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I'll be there. I'm presenting in a seminar on Sunday on peer review (my sole foray into the world of Comp Theory, haha). I'll be around for the whole conference though (it's not as expensive for me, seeing as how I live down the road from the conference site).
Timshel Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I almost presented but had to bow out at the last minute due to money issues (I'm in North Carolina), and now I'm really glad that I did because it's really going to be expensive for me to move from the east coast to the west coast! Eek! I will be at the CEA conference in Richmond, though, at the end of the month.
desaparecido Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Oh! I'll be at the CEA conference, too. What're you presenting on/which panel?

TripWillis Posted March 17, 2012 Author Posted March 17, 2012 On my way from NYC right now. Penn Station is super weird at 6 am on a Saturday, I gotta admit.
TripWillis Posted March 17, 2012 Author Posted March 17, 2012 Okay, so is anyone here right now? Wanna get a beer? Preferably not someplace with a ton of Irish enthusiasm? PM me.
desaparecido Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Ah, if only I was still in town. The hotel bar was pretty good yesterday, though. I'd recommend staying away from Legends. Crappy crowd, the bartender was awful and rude, and I'd imagine that would only be worse on St. Patrick's Day. How'd the panel go?

desaparecido Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 Good to hear! Mine went pretty well. Got good, useful feedback on a paper I'm planning to revise+expand. One odd thing happened: The chair of the panel, a PhD student a prestigious university, didn't present her paper because she said she was too busy with classes. That annoyed me. I don't know.

desaparecido Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 I know! Worst part is, the prestigious university she attends rejected me. If only I, y'know, showed up to conferences unprepared to deliver a paper for my own panel, maybe I'd have gotten in. Sorry, I'm a bit bitter. I'll stop. Two Espressos 1
