I think it's extremely strong in comparative-historical sociology and sociology of religion...

Yes! I think what you must have Phil Gorski in mind. They have a cluster of people doing comparative studies on empires, such as Gorski, Adams (has strong affiliation with her Michigan collegues), Stamatov (from UCLA), also we shouldn't forget Wallerstein.

saphire, are you also in Comparative Historical Sociology? Where have you got into so far? Currently I have got into Chicago, but I have been weighing between Chicago and Yale ever since I started application. I used also to have UCLA at mind, since they have Michael Mann(my favorite) and Perry Anderson. Unfortunately I was rejected by them. But I am definitely waiting for result from Yale.

I would very much like to hear from others who are interested in Comparative Historical Sociology, especially in the classical topics such as state formation, revolution, modernization, etc.

Sociology of religion is definitely not one of Yale's specialties.

I am an international applicant. I have applied to UCSB, Juergensmayer factor. But got rejection.

Still waiting from Columbia-Yale. Gorski is the right man, and I think he loves history very much.

Yes UCLA is a heaven for comparative historical sociology. Faculties of Sociology and History do have a large numbers of professors who are pleased to supervise interdisciplinary studies...But I haven't applied to it :)

good luck,

Thanks (that was me)!

No word about funding yet. I haven't received the official letter from GSAS yet, only an email from the DGS.

I see the decisions were posted on the application website, but no email was sent to announce this (I only got an unofficial email from the DGS).

Do you know where these decisions are posted? I've been looking on Yale's website but I haven't seen a place to check my actual decision.

On the first page you see after you log in scroll all the way down and there should be a link to your decision. Maybe they haven't finished updating the applications, which could explain why there was no email notification.

Interesting: nothing there yet. You're probably right that they haven't finished updating the apps. I'm not especially optimistic now!!

Maybe they meant 9,500 applicants to the entire grad school, not just the soc department? Even 950 for the soc department seems like a lot - I don't think even NYU had that many applicants, and it has a similar ranking, not to mention NY beats New Haven any day...

Oh, I bet you're right!

I'm sure you're right. Harvard GSAS claim on their website that last year's applicant pool was approx. 6500, and I guess Yale's was the same. Considering this year's economy which is a great incentive to apply to grad schools which offer full funding for 5 years, the larger number makes sense.

Last year they had 175 applicants and 11 enrolling students at Yale's sociology department (http://www.yale.edu/graduateschool/acad ... ology.html).

The department received 250-275 applications, meaning there was a ~50% jump in applications from last year.

Do you know how many students were admitted this year?
