I'm reviving this thread in anticipation of my fellow LSU admits receiving acceptances next week! Anyone else on here apply to LSU? Anyone been to Baton Rouge before? I'll be going during the week of March 18th and am pretty unsure what to expect from the state/city.

Wait, do you think they aren't done sending acceptances?

Alright then! I totally wrote them off after acceptances got posted earlier this week. I guess we'll have to see what the next week brings.

Yeah, the posts from this week were me and my S/O. We were both accepted. But I gathered from talking to people on here that they usually extend an offer to a few people first, and more later. She said they let further acceptances know by the 15th!

i'm happy to answer any questions about BR/LA/campus/the program/etc/neverending slashes. i'm also happy to meet when you're here if you have more questions after checking things out... i've told the DGS i'm available to talk/meeting with incoming students, so you might get referred to me anyway outside of the board  ;)

Yay! I'm sure you'll meet us then. We've been compiling a list of questions for people... but I guess I should ask - I've looked at a few names already, but I'm wondering what professors in 19th-century British lit to contact to meet with when we're there. Any names for me?

i'll message you.

Thanks for your help! I contacted everyone we talked about, and two got back to me already and we set up meeting times.

I am really excited about this program. I did my BA at a lower-ranked state university and my MA at a non-doctoral granting institution, so LSU is a significant step up for me. My department chair and two of my letter writers (one is my teaching supervisor and one was my thesis advisor) are excited for me. The more I research the program and talk to people about it, the more I think LSU will be a perfect fit for me.

After seeing the waitlist post on the results board, I called the graduate office this morning and spoke with the secretary.  She said the committee is in their final meeting right now to analyze their top forty candidates and determine what their status should be.  She did confirm that a few acceptances already went out (as we know from thatjewishgirl and Mr. thatjewishgirl) but wasn't sure whether all the acceptances had or not.  She did say that after the meeting finishes, the DGS will hand her the list of students to alert and that if I hadn't heard anything by the end of next Wednesday to call her back and inquire.  She did say that she couldn't promise notifications would go out immediately, as she does have over 300 rejections to send out to MFA applicants, but that they got 110 applications for roughly 10-12 Ph.D. slots, so that gives an idea of our chances of getting in.

Datatape, so glad you called. I saw that waitlist post and immediately thought "I hope that's not him!" since I know you were waitlisted last year. Good luck!

And "mr. thatjewishgirl" says "I'm completely comfortable going by that moniker." :)

Also - did I read your post correctly? They had 110 PhD applicants and over 300 MFA?! Wow. I'm surprised at how few PhD applicants and how many MFA.

Just got rejected.  I'm pretty shocked; I was waitlisted last year on a much weaker application and this was my #1 choice.

On the MFA scale of things, LSU has some of the best funding around @ 16,500 a year for three years. Also, they have amazing poetry faculty.

I think the number of applicants they receive is related to the funding, mostly. Also, given the way the national creative writing rankings work -- they're based on where people apply (and are collected via a facebook page) -- having funding tends to help. LSU is unlikely to make it to the top 10, but having an package like that puts them in the top 20 easy.

I'm so sorry, Datatape. This just shows how arbitrary this whole process is! At least you have some other great options to choose from.

That sucks datatape, I'm sorry. I felt the same way when I got outright rejected from Buffalo after a waitlist last year (also on a much weaker application). Like proflorax said, I just chalked it up to arbitrary randomness and took comfort in my acceptances. It sucks that it's your first choice, but I hope your own acceptances make you feel better.

Not to rub salt into anyone's wounds - I cried for days when my partner was accepted somewhere and I was rejected, which happened more than once, so I understand how awful rejection feels - but I do want to say that I signed my contract today. :) I am really excited to start in the fall. Now to find housing... Having never left Oklahoma, I already find this prospect daunting.

Yeah, sorry about that - sucks to get rejected (especially from a top choice, and especially when you think you stand a good chance of being admitted).

Thanks for the support, guys.  It stung a lot when I got home and saw that email waiting, but after taking solace in the arms of Marie Callender, I'm feeling less terrible.  I wanted LSU, but they didn't want me, and I can accept that.  I can also accept that consuming an entire jar of marshmallow fluff is aiding me on my road to dealing with my stages of grief.

Sorry Datatape. That really sucks. The whole process sucks. Glad you are feeling better about it today, though. Eating away troubled seems to work for many people; personally, I prefer to drown my sorrows in beer, but whatever helps ease the sting.

Hello everybody,

I was considering applying to LSU, but I am pretty unevolved in the self confidence department (to put it kindly), so I am a bit scared after having read this thread.

Anyway, has everybody on the topic written to a professor at LSU as a part of their admission process?

What about the thread scares you?

LSU asked for such a short SOP that I didn't include references to any specific professors or anything specific about the department. I wrote and sent this application last in the cycle, and by that time I just wanted to write something generic and be done with it. My husband, however, did reference specific professors, but neither of us contacted anyone beforehand. We were both accepted in the first round of admissions.

People being turned down - the scary part.

Did you and your husband go to MA or PhD? Congratulations to both!
