jkathleen Posted March 10, 2012 Posted March 10, 2012 I have been accepted into the University of Texas at Austin master's SLP program. I am interested in the UTA program mainly because of the opportunity to get a bilingual certificate. However, I am from California, so I would need to find some way to avoid out-of-state tuition in order to make going to UTA instead of a Cal State affordable. Students who are offered certain assistantships receive a waiver for in-state tuition. I have contacted the Department to request additional info on assistantships, and learned that applications for assistantships are accepted in May. This is well after the deadline to choose a program, which makes my decision all the more difficult. Does anyone out there have any information on UTA assistantships in the SLP program? How hard are they to get (especially the ones that afford in-state tuition)? What might an assistantship entail (research, teaching, clerical assistance in the department)? Any information would be useful.
lwilson0884 Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Congrats I was just accepted to UT Dallas for their speech-language pathology master's program. I'm not sure if the two schools run things similarly or not, but I was notified of the tuition reduction (out of state being reduced to instate) in my acceptance letter. I didnt do anything extra to apply for it, so I'm wondering if it's based off of your application?
SomedaySLP Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 I don't know anything specific to answer your questions about UTA, but I've been offered/interviewed with a couple of schools for assistantships and they can be any of those that you listed. I was offered one that was more clerical, with some grading on the side. Another was more research-based. That's a bummer you wouldn't know until May, good luck with your decisions. At least you're in the fortunate position of having options

Best wishes to all, congrats on the acceptances, and a special congrats to SLP-Allie on the scholarship offer at UW! You go, girl! Edited March 14, 2012 by jkathleen
JenniferD Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 (edited) Hi jkathleen, I just emailed my decision to attend UT Austin this fall. This is what I received about RA/TA according to the graduate program coordinator: Current TA salary rates for 2011-12 (rates have yet to post for 2012-13 academic year): MA students may receive an assignment for a 10 hr. position as a TA (Teaching Assistant) @ $2,375 per semester. Students who are assigned such positions will receive a (TBA) Tuition Benefit Assistance of $1,892 from the Graduate School. Students assigned a position as a RA (Research Assistant) will NOT receive tuition benefit assistance. Salary rates may vary and are assigned by individual faculty from their Professorships or federally funded grants. It seems like TA/RA won't necessarily cover much of the tuition, plus I've heard from some current students that it's also difficult to manage the workload considering we still have to keep up our academic courses and practica. But I did find some interesting research/labs at UT that closely match my interests. Have you made your decision yet? Edited April 10, 2012 by JenniferD

I decided not to attend UTA, in part because I couldn't get any solid answers on whether I could benefit from in-state funding. It all worked out in the end, though. I'm going to MGH! Best wishes at UTA, and thank you for taking the time to provide the information above. It's been really nice the way everyone has been looking out for each other over the past few weeks as we worked through these decisions Edited April 13, 2012 by jkathleen
katie25 Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Hi kathleen, i was hoping you could answer a personal question for me, since you were accepted into the UT program. I have had my heart set on that school since I began my undergrad career, but I am getting extremely nervous that I won't be accepted because UT is listed in the top 10 SLP grad programs..... I was hoping that you could tell me your gpa, GRE scores any other extras that may have helped you get in. Thank you!!!
