Change my mind after accepting an offer

If I accept an offer now and change my mind later in August due to family matters (finance, logistics, etc.) and refuse to attend the program, would there be any consequences?

If I accept an offer now and change my mind later in August due to family matters (finance, logistics, etc.) and refuse to attend the program, would there be any consequences?

The scientific community is very small (as in each sub-division). It could potentially harm you and prevent you from landing a decent, good post-doc position after graduation.
