So I am starting my phd this fall. But my first year is masters. I know what my topic is going to be for my phd. But I wanted to know how to pick a topic for masters.

Is it based on what u will b doing for ur phd or completely different?

It should (almost) never be completely different if you know you're going to be in the same program for MA/PhD.

For most people, a thesis will serve as a subsection/chapter in their dissertation. You will likely be involved in a program of research that builds off prior studies and your thesis is a natural jumping point to your eventual dissertation topic.
