funding for MPhil in Wales

Anyone have any tips on getting funding? Most of the aid seems to be for UK and EU students. I know my Stafford will apply, but once tuition is taken out, the budget gets a bit tight.

I'm afraid you're much too late for UK overseas research student awards; like most U.S. funding they require a considerable amount of time to mull over the selection.

An applicant to any foreign universities should apply for aid early, or prepare to tighten your belt.

ok, first here is a good list of domestic awards

http://www.sc.edu/ofsp/national.html

in particular check out the fulbright, nsf.

you might as well apply to the gates while you're at it, though it's at cambridge and you wanted wales. i must caution you, i can't imagine why you'd want to study in wales. they do not have any well-known institutions and, as a foreigner, you may lack the cultural knowledge necessary to argue the merits of a welsh mphil with british academics. then you'd return home with a no-name MPhil, which is not accepted as a qualification at american schools.

second, here is http://www.caorc.org/

third, i do not know about the welsh system, but if you were applying to england, you would look around the graduate school website for the phrase overseas research studentships (ORS). most boards of graduate studies are responsible for administering these and generally it's your best shot for funding, save something idiosyncractic like a scholarship offered by your faculty in whatever field you're in.

Thanks for the long list. I will pursue as many of those as possible.

The purpose for pursuing an MPhil in Wales is because I am looking at medieval history, particularly Celtic ecclesiastical. For that, Wales is perfectly reasonable. And I would use the MPhil as significant research for my application to a PhD program. UWales is respected in the US history departments, providing it isn't a terminal degree. As far as a terminal doctorate goes, even Oxford/Cambridge isn't as well-respected in the US for their DPhil.

Wow, what a great list! Can I ask you who emailed you those fellowship sites? I am looking for funding for schooling in Canada.

If you're thinking of the University of Wales at Aberystwyth (which, if you like beaches, scenery and sheep you should!), they have some pretty good funding opportunities. The Aberystwyth Postgraduate Research Studentship competition provides fairly big stipends, and is open to international students. Other than that, ESRC studentships linked to specific research projects look like they only provide tuition remission unless you're British. This page has a list of funding opportunities within the university, but they're explained more clearly on the geography site; presumably "your" department would be a good place to ask.
