yanyan03 Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 hI everyone I just recieved the admission of MPA from Maxwell School, Syracuse University I am an international student and not very familiar with MPA/MPP program in USA I also got the admission of MSPPM from , Heinz School, Carnegie Mellon mpa of maxwell is ranking the top1 in usa, but why I notice there are not so many people apply for it, at least from this forum? I also applied for upenn, london school of economics and political science, johns hopkins, Maryland I hope you could give me some help on how to make a choice among these universities Thank you so much~ btw, is there anyone who also got the admission of Maxwell?
dagger Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 I've also been admitted to the Maxwell School and here's a few of my thoughts on the pro's and con's of attending: Pros: *Its a one year program. You can save on tuition money. *According to US News, it does have a high ranking (Although those rankings in themselves are dubious.) Cons *Because it is a one year program, you are not able to take an internship over the summer between the standard two years. The website indicates that this does not affect job placement, but I would still be dubious. *The city of Syracuse is cold as hell. It gets significant lake effect snow. I've also heard that the city itself does not offer much. I'm sure there's many more advantages and disadvantages to attending the Maxwell School. These are just a few I could quickly rattle off.
younglions Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Sorry to ask an off topic question, but when did you hear about your admission to the MSPPM program? When did you apply? As for Syracuse, I can't provide too much information--I do know it is a less than ideal place to live though.
DefinitelyMaybe Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Did you all get word from Syracuse through SNAIL mail or E-mail?
dagger Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Did you all get word from Syracuse through SNAIL mail or E-mail? They sent a business sized envelope to my permanent house.

40404 Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 Anyone here know more about Syracuse's MA-IR Program?
DefinitelyMaybe Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I called them today to check on the status of my app and they told me it is in "secondary review" and I should hear from them next week. Anybody know what that means?

Anybody know what that means? Hi Definitely Maybe, I emailed their admissions office and I am not sure if the same admissions people decide for MPA as in the IR program but the admissions officer for the IR program said that they received a record number of apps this year. Likewise, one of the people in the admissions committee was out of town last week, thus, delaying the process a bit. She said to email her again if I don't hear from her by end of this week. Hope we all get lucky!
saisonsaparis Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 I got my admissions package from Syracuse in the mail today. Hopefully others were so lucky today as well!! I had a personal note from the Associate Director and am being considered for aid but won't find out until mid-March. I feel more nervous now than I did when I applied!!
PeteZahut Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Congrats! I got my admissions package in late Jan. Waiting to hear about funding as well and quite nervous about it too. If no funding, then looks like I'll have to attend a state school... I plan to attend the open house on March 23.
40404 Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Hey I was just notified that I'm admitted to the MA-IR program. Anyone else here doing IR? I am afraid I cannot go to the Open House since I'm in Manila. I hope you share your Open House experiences with us!
thewaitinggame09 Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Hi Ya'll !! I got into the MPA program, and I want to do the national security track. I sent my stuff in around late-Jan and hear back from them at the end of Feb. I hope to get some funding. Right now, I live and work in DC. I plan on attending one of the Open Houses in April? Anyone going in April to visit?
pritinsp Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Hi I just got an e-mail informing me that I have been admitted into the MPA program and that scholarship decisions will come in by april 1st. Anyone here who has already got a scholarship award? How generous are they? Also,on the reputation of the program, does anyone here know if this school can provide opportunities later on with world bank,UN,etc? I hope they get back abt the scholarship soon! everything depends on that!
Jeppe Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Grah, I'm still waiting to hear from the MA-IR program. If they have an open-house event March 23. I guess I will hear from them before then, at least.

From the acceptance letter, it told me that I decisions would be made in mid-March...So my guess is they are making their decisions this week and mail them out next week. But I think funding is pretty limited from what I have heard from folks and by reading the message boards and newspaper articles. Not a huge endowment like Harvard or Princeton per say. As far as networking goes, they have a pretty good alumni here in the DC area. They also have a ton of older Alumni in the DC high up in jobs that can help you out and network with you. Since, I was admitted and looking at other schools. I went to a Maxwell Alumni function in the DC area last week, and I was pretty impressed with the program and with folks there. It was a huge boast in making more of a decision to go there and of course depends on funding of course. But as far as the UN goes, they have a huge network in the NYC area just as they do in the DC area. I hope this helps.

I can't tell you what funding will be like this year due to the economic crisis - even for a private University like Syracuse. I guess you'll just have to wait. If you attend, your diploma will have a great reputation behind it - not to mention the resources that come with an extensive and influential network of alumni in all the east coast "power cities" - Boston, NYC, DC, etc. It's common for Maxwell MPA graduates to take positions at top institutions like those you mentioned. In fact, several actively recruit on campus. That's the advantage of a reputation like the Maxwell School's (and the MPA program specifically). You don't get that at many places.
pritinsp Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Hello! Given that Syracuse has a brand name, how will the MPA form Syracuse compare with those from Princeton and Harvrad? What abt MPm from georgetown? Syracuse is ranked no 1 much ahead of other programs .. Also how would syracuse compare against USC (SPPD) - the reson i ask is because I have got a merit scholarship in USC and assuming nothing from Syracuse, would it be worthwhile spending an additional $30,000 in Syracuse?
number35 Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 I'm from Los Angeles, and also strongly considering Maxwell. In comparing a merit award at USC vs. Maxwell, don't forget to keep in mind that living cost will be substantially different. At USC, if you want to live in a "decent" neighborhood (i.e. somewhat safe) it will cost you a solid penny every month. I've heard the rent/living expenses at Syracuse are fairly cheap. Also, Syracuse is a 1 year program, which is making it financially enticing to me (although, like you all, I haven't received word on funding yet). My 2 cents...
pritinsp Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Hi You make a very important point about the cost of living in LA - the syracuse letter mentions that $1200 would be avg cost of living per month in syracuse.. any guesses what it would be in LA? and of course the point of paying some extra money for the brand name of maxwell school does seem reasonable.. one consideration that puts USC on top is the fact that my husband works in denver.. so LA is going to be a lot easier to handle in terms of travel than Syracuse!

To me, this would boil down to where you want to wind up working. USC is a very solid program but I've heard that more than a few graduates of theirs struggle to find the kind of work they want on the east coast where there isn't much of an alumni network. If you want to work on the west coast this is fine - maybe even preferable to Syracuse. However, if you want to work on the east coast a Syracuse degree would be much more helpful. EDIT: Oh and yes, the rumors are true. The university hill neighborhood of Syracuse is very affordable.
PeteZahut Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Having lived an hour from Syracuse during undergrad, I can tell you that the cost of living is VERY low in upstate New York. You can probably live quite comfortably for around 1000 per month (rent, food, utilities) close to the campus (living in the suburbs is a bit nicer and quieter but also a bit more costly and will require a car as Syracuse lacks decent public transportation)... The main drawbacks are the brutal, snowy winters and the lack of "glamour" compared to a large city (L.A., NYC). But if you're the type to enjoy the outdoors (hiking, skiing, fishing, etc.), then Syracuse is a good place to live.

How many months in a year does it snow there?
stigMPA Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Hey PeteZahut, How brutal do the winters get? How many months in a year does it snow there? Syracuse is the snowiest city (pop 100,000+) in America. (source: http://www.123syracuse.com/snowycities.html) It's a one-year masters, though, so total snowfall should compare favorably to two-year programs in the north.
