40404 Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Syracuse is the snowiest city (pop 100,000+) in America. (source: http://www.123syracuse.com/snowycities.html) It's a one-year masters, though, so total snowfall should compare favorably to two-year programs in the north. Unfortunately for me, I applied to the IR program which is about 1.5-2 yrs...
PeteZahut Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 In Binghamton (an hour south of Syracuse), we'd usually have snowfall from November through late March...in Syracuse, which is next to a large lake and closer to the Great Lakes, expect there to be heavier snowfalls for longer durations... On the bright side, you eventually get used to it :|
40404 Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Where do SU students go for internships usually? NYC? Isn't it a good 4-5 hrs away? How marketable is an SU Maxwell diploma? I am so torn and deciding where to go is usually the first thing that comes into my mind upon waking up and the last thing I think about before going to bed.
40404 Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Grah, I'm still waiting to hear from the MA-IR program. If they have an open-house event March 23. I guess I will hear from them before then, at least. Hi Jeppe, Maybe you could send an email to the admissions department. That's how I knew about the result of my app. I emailed Mar 1st and they got back the next day with a decision. The letter is actually dated Mar 7th so I am assuming they know some of the results already but waiting for a few days before they release them. Apps are higher this year and (the admissions director is actually spending his Sundays reviewing apps - based from the email) so that's what is keeping them from releasing everything early. Goodluck!

I actually got accepted to the MPA program and I plan on concentrating on National and International Security Policy. Anyways, I actually have a Maxwell School flier right here (from the mail back when they mailed me stuff about the program), and they have internship agreements across the world!! Also here is a link to their website of global programs that they have: So there area plenty of places to go and intern in the world http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/ir/globalpro ... p-main.asp Even though I have 5 years work experience and counting in DC, I plan on interning abroad and/or doing research on counter-terrorism. FYI - I went to a Maxwell Alumni function last week in DC and I was really impressed with Alumni here in DC and with the networking. Plus I am sure the reputation here in DC is just as good in NYC and across the world. I found out from talking to folks and networking they don't call the "Maxwell Mafia" for nothing. Also, by doing a ton of research on my own over the last few weeks and going to the Almuni event, the Maxwelll School , the Alumni, and its contacts have plenty of opportunities for its students. That is one of the reasons why I am really excited about the program and just about 4 months ago I had no idea about the program. Also, I am not looking forward to the weather too and I am from the South where it barely snows. So it will make two of us. I hope this helps.

NYC is a four hour drive from Syracuse, but in reality the program is too short and intensive for that to matter. Maxwell MPA students usually complete their degree in an academic year and the summer before and after, so there isn't really time for an internship during the course of study - even locally. Don't get me wrong - there are myriad opportunities for Maxwell MPA grads afterward - you'll see that Maxwell MPAs are consistently placed in top organizations. It's difficult to talk about the "marketability" of any MPA degree without knowing exactly what you intend to do with it, but if there is such a thing Maxwell has it in spades. The alumni network is extensive and influential and the degree can get your foot in the door at some big places. As people on this forum have said, rankings aren't everything but it's not by accident that the Maxwell School and Maxwell MPA are both ranked #1. Consider your time in Syracuse as a chance to learn and prepare yourself. There really isn't anything Maxwell MPA does badly, and hopefully at the end of your studies you'll be ready to tear into whatever kind of work you have in mind. --- If you don't mind me asking, what are your other options? It sounds like you're agonizing over this. Full disclosure: Barring an unforeseen funding bonanza from my close #2 I expect to enroll at Maxwell. I'm pretty excited about the place and sometimes have trouble understanding that others may not be.

I found out it bacsically by surfing the Maxwell School website (a few weeks ago) and found out the school has an agreement through the Lauder School of Government and Institute for Counter-Terrorism (ICT) at the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC), Herzliya, Israel. Hi thewaitinggame09, Maybe you should change your username since I guess you know the results by now . Anyway, are you dead set on Maxwell? I really hope they send out funding info soon.

I am waiting to hear back from a few more schools. I think I am kinda leaning towards that program but I plan on visiting the school in early April to make a decision. They are suppose to send funding stuff to everyone no later than April 1.

PeteZahut Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 I'll be at the open house on 3/23 and probably attend the networking event in NYC on 3/30. I've also been contacted by a current student and will be following-up on that with some questions. Has anyone gotten word of funding yet?
decisionsihope Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 "any word on funding?" I was fortunate to be accepted the MPA/IR program but haven't heard on funding yet...soon, perhaps?
dagger Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 I received an e-mail from Christine a few days ago detailing my funding package. It looks like they're starting to trickle out.

Thanks for the information Dagger, Again at the risk of being crude, could you let us know what kind of support they were able to offer you? Congratulations and hope you are pleased with the result.
PeteZahut Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Got an email today...only 5k for the entire program. It also says I'll still be considered for additional aid but it seems unlikely. There's still the opportunity to get a 5-10k grant but only after I enroll and go through the summer program... If this is it, then I don't think it will be worth taking out over 50k in loans (on top of the loans I already have)...
saisonsaparis Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 GRRRR!!! Totally expected but still.. GRRRRR!!! Got this email today: "We have given your request for a graduate financial award strong consideration. Unfortunately, the size of the applicant pool and its academic competitiveness were extremely high this year, making the competition very keen for the awards that we can make. We regret that the Department of Public Administration and Syracuse University are not able to provide any institutional support for your studies in the MPA program. While we were not able to make you an award at this time, should we either be able to make you an award from the Department of Public Administration or recommend you for an award in another University department, we will notify you immediately. It is not likely that this will occur prior to our deadline of April 15. Very often, opportunities occur over the summer that we are not aware of at this time, although there are no guarantees at funding beyond this point. Should you chose to accept our offer of admission without aid at this time, we ask that you are prepared for the full costs of attendance." Question now is... when/how will I find out about loans? I have submitted my FAFSA already.

I have submitted my FAFSA already. Well I don't know about loans and I'm still waiting on possible funding from the IR/PR program. However I did visit for the MPA program in the fall and I remember students saying that there are opportunities for GAs and jobs and such that you may get after enrolling but obviously there are no guarantees and if you don't get specified funding before enrolling you should be prepared to pay for the whole thing yourself (however you plan to loans, etc.) But that said the entire school is very large and there are definitely possibilities for GAs and the like once you arrive. I have no idea what kind of percentage of people eventually get these or even how many people get initial funding. Sorry you didn't have better news. Good luck with your decision!

I am in the same boat and got the MPA funding email. I plan on applying for GA and RA jobs throughout campus. I don't think there are presently that many GA jobs open now but I have a feeling a ton will open up later. You just have to check the student employement website for openings constantly like right now. I can tell you that there are a few openings right now and looking for folks for the 2009-2010 school year. Might as well get an early start. I am doing the same.
Dreams Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Question now is... when/how will I find out about loans? I have submitted my FAFSA already. You should be able to do the loan part yourself. I was messing around today and logged into my account on Syracuse's myslice system. I still have not received a financial award notice, but it gave me the option of choosing various types of loans and even a breakdown of costs for the degree. If you received your SSUID number already, then you should be able to create an account in the system.
Charlesf Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 I am 99% sure I will be attending Maxwell in the fall for IR, been accepted, though I would be surprised if I got funding(no decision yet). Some of my other schools are in 'better' places, but academically I think Maxwell has the most too offer. The global program in particular I find exciting. Will be attending a welcome weekend next weekend, should be interesting I suppose.
Jeppe Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Dammit, I still haven't heard anything. Wrote the IR admissions staff four days ago, but no reply. I know I only send in my application a few days before deadline (end of January), but I would still expect a decision by now.

Jeppe Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Yeah, called them twice, just got a pre-recorded message. Oh well, it's not like Maxwell is the only school I'm waiting to hear from at least, heh.
number35 Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I'll likely be at Maxwell in June, and looking forward to it. Maxwell Mafia here I come...
