Technical Communication

I am currently a tech writer for the government here in DC. I am looking into pursuing a MA/MS in Technical Communication (I have a BA in English) but I don't know what I should do. For the most part, MA in TSC is a limited program found in a small handful of schools over the country. Also, I don't even know if going away to school for it (there is only one school near me that offers a similar degree and I am not keen on going there) is even worth it. I believe my work would pay for me to go someplace local, but like I said, I don't know if that’s what I want to do. I like the University environment and I loved my undergrad studies, but my field doesn't necessarily require a degree that is academically oriented the way an MA in English is. I need to learn software applications, desktop publishing, etc. to get ahead. Not a history of rhetoric. This is all stuff I can learn in hands on classes locally....

Gahh as you can see I am confused and I do not know what to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...oh and anyone else out there doing something like this?
